Micrometer Screw Gauge
• Micrometer screw-gauge is another
instrument used for measuring accurately
the diameter of a thin wire or the thickness
of a sheet of metal.
• It consists of a U-shaped frame fitted with
a screwed spindle which is attached to a
thimble.
Parts of micrometer screw gauge
• The micrometers in our laboratory have a pitch of 0.50 mm
(two full turns are required to close the jaws by 1.00 mm).
• This movement of the spindle is shown on an engraved
linear millimeter scale on the sleeve.
• The jaws can be adjusted by rotating the thimble using the
small ratchet knob. This includes a friction clutch which
prevents too much tension being applied.
When the anvil and spindle end are brought in
contact, the edge of the circular scale should be at
the zero of the sleeve (linear scale) and the zero of
the circular scale should be opposite to the datum
line of the sleeve. If the zero is not coinciding with
the datum line, there will be a positive or negative
zero error as shown in figure below.
How to measure an object?
• In order to measure an object, the object is placed between the jaws
and the thimble is rotated using the ratchet until the object is secured.
• While taking a reading, the thimble is turned until the wire is held
firmly between the anvil and the spindle.
• The least count of the micrometer screw can be calculated using the
formula given below:
50 = 0.5 mm
1 = 0.5mm /50

• Least count

= 0.01 mm
• Note that the ratchet knob must be used to
secure the object firmly between the jaws,
otherwise the instrument could be damaged
or give an inconsistent reading.
• We are recommended 3 clicks of the ratchet
before taking the reading. The lock may be
used to ensure that the thimble does not
rotate while you take the reading.
For example:

Reading = Linear scale reading + (Coinciding circular scale x Least count)

= 3.5 mm + (6 x 0.01 mm)

= ( 3.5 + 0.06 ) mm
= 3.56 mm
