Mike Pearson's Teacher Work Sample IISTEP II. UNIT PLAN AND PRE-UNIT ASSESSMENTSUBJECT Ninth Grade MathCOURSE TITLE Algebra ITITLE OF UNIT Chapter 9: Quadratic Functions1. UNIT PLANA. Brief Overview (What) In this unit students work learn to find the axis of symmetry, the vertex, themaxima and minima, and the zeros of quadratic equations, and they will learn tofactor quadratic equation. They will learn to sketch and graph quadratic equationsusing a graphing calculator and with tables of values.B. Rationale or Importance of theUnit (Why)The ability to factor quadratics, find the axis of symmetry, the vertex and thezeros is a critical skill for many scientific, technical and engineering problems inthe real world. Understanding quadratic functions is an essential step inunderstanding polynomial functions. Without these skills a student cannotadvance to such courses as Algebra II, Trigonometry, or Calculus.C. Unit goals aligned to Standards. NCTM: Algebra:1) analyze functions of one variable by investigating rates of change, intercepts, zeros, asymptotes, and local and global behavior 2) understand and compare the properties of classes of functions, includingexponential, polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and periodic functions.HCPS:MA.AI.9.3 Determine the zeros of a linear or quadratic function algebraicallyand graphicallySample performance Assessment : The student: Shows/explains how to use analgebraic method (or graph, or graphing calculator) to find the zeros of a function.

GLO:1) Self-directed learner.2) Complex thinker.3) Effective communicator.
2. DESCRIPTION OF MULTIPLEASSESSMENTSA. List the summative and formativetypes of assessments you use.FORMATIVE:Check body language of students during the lesson.Listen carefully to student questions and comments.Check student work by using white boards during the lesson.Check daily homework.Give pop quizzes to check for understanding.SUMMATIVE:Pretest to posttest gain scores will indicate what students have learned.B. Explain Your Pretest/Posttest plan On a pretest students will be given 6 items, one for each of the learning objectivesof the unit. They will take a similar 6 item test on the posttest. I will use thePretest-Posttest = Gain to determine the success of the unit. I will then separateand compare the scores for Males and Females.3. OVERVIEW & LESSON PLANSA. List the main topics Major Topics Covered:1. Multiply binomials using the Box method2. Finding the axis of symmetry of a quadratic function.3. Finding the vertex of a quadratic.4. Determining if the vertex is a maxima or a minima5. Factoring a quadratic equation with the X-Box method6. Finding the zeros of a quadratic equation with the X-Box method7. Use a graphing calculator to find the zeros of a quadratic equation
