Japan Earthquake Response
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude8.9 earthquake occurred near theeast coast of Honshu, Japan. Theearthquake produced a tsunamiwhich struck the port city of Sendai. Japan¶s televisionnetwork showed a massive surgeof debris-filled water sweepingaway buildings, cars and shipsand reaching far inland. It hasbeen reported that the tsunami,spawned by the largestearthquake in Japan¶s history,produced over 30 foot waves,sweeping away boats, cars,homes, and people. Flooding hasdevastated most of the Japanesenorth eastern coast.A tsunami warning was also extended across the Pacific to North and SouthAmerica. Coastal areas in the Philippines and other parts of the Pacific were alsoevacuated ahead of the tsunami¶s expected arrival.We at The Global Innovation Commons believe that open source solutions couldprovide assistance to the areas that have been affected by this natural disaster.
