Introduction
• An Attribute is a`peculiar and essential characteristic` (Webster)
• 5 types of attribute:
– Structural attributes
• Physical characteristics of a particular product or service
• E.g. an automobile might have electric windows
– Sensory Attributes
• Relate to senses of touch, smell, taste, and sound
– Performance Attributes
• Relate to whether or not a particular product or service performs as it
supposed to.
• E.g. does the engine start?
– Temporal Attributes
• Relate to time
• E.g. were delivery schedules met?
– Ethical Attributes
• E.g. do they report properly? Is their accounting transparent?
Understanding Attribute Charts
• Attributes charts deal with binomial and poisson process that
are not measurements

 A defect is an irregularity or problem with a larger unit


 E.g. A piece of glass may contain several bubbles or scratches

• A defective is a unit that, as a whole, is not acceptable or does


not meet performance requirements
– E.g. a letter with a wrong address is defective

• Defectives are monitored using p and np charts. Defects are


monitored using c and u charts.
