Dropping the Bomb:


Moral Debate
successes
► Here theory and practice came together, as the
problems of achieving critical mass-a nuclear
explosion-and the construction of a deliverable
bomb were worked out.
► It also managed to defeat the last remaining Axis
in power, Imperial Japan, which ended the
World War.

► It was the first and the only time nuclear weapon
was used on a major populated area.
Failures

► Some of the Japanese civilians had been mutated


by the nuclear explosion even though it was
dropped in Hiroshima.

► People started to argue why the atomic bomb


was dropped and was there another reason that
President Truman wanted the bomb to be
dropped in Japan.
Consequences
► The U.S. was afraid that other countries would
start to make nuclear weapons like the atomic
bomb
Consequences
► the two major cities of Japan, Nagasaki and
Hiroshima, didn’t have much medical care going
around. Within two months most remaining
survivors died because of cancer or severe
injuries.
Consequences
► Long term effects of radiation from the bombs
still continue to kill thousands of people.
