Case Study

Billy Craig was 19 years old when he spent a year in heavy combat in Afghanistan.
Although he was upset when his buddies were killed, he was secretly relieved when his wounds
got him sent home. He studied forestry and became a ranger in a national forest. He was
considered a loner and showed no interest in marriage. He never talked about his experience
in Afghanistan with anyone.

During the television coverage of the latest anniversary of the World Trade Center and
Pentagon Tragedies, Billy began to have nightmares and flashbacks about killing the enemy and
about a friend who was dismembered. Billy became angry more frequently and startled easily.
After a month of not seeing him, other rangers found Billy in his cabin, very depressed and
surrounded by old guns and grenades. He kept repeating that he should have died in
Afghanistan too. He admitted that he was intending to shoot himself. With effort, the rangers
convinced him to go with them to mental health center, where he was admitted, diagnosed
with, and treated for delayed posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression.
