Budget Reduction Suggestions

2011-2012

1. Change the HVAC control occupied setting times in buildings from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00
p.m. in the secondary schools and 3:00 p.m. in the elementary schools.
2. Reduce to a four (4) day week this summer for all staff, but close down the buildings.
3. Consolidate custodial services this summer to one building at a time and shut the other
buildings down.
4. Turn lights off when not in use.
5. Install master switches in computer labs to shut down all computers at the end of the
day.
6. Shut down computers when not in use.
7. Remove all personal energy drawing appliances (coffee pots, microwaves, heaters,
warmer, refrigerators, etc.)
8. Keep the classroom lights turned off over the summer.
9. Turn off all but a few parking lot lights unless there is an event requiring the lighting.
10. Reduce room lighting as much as possible. Our rooms are brighter than recommended
lumens for the eyes.
11. When the buildings are closed, they are closed to all, no activities.
12. Turn off air conditioners over the summer and save on wear and tear on the HVAC units
(why cool air in an unoccupied room and don’t bring in outside moist air that creates a
favorable mold environment).

14. Charge a larger fee for parking permits
15. Return to half day kindergarten
16. Reduce or eliminate the Senior Citizen Tax Rebate
17. Provide our own lawn maintenance
18. Reduce the number of summer lawn cuttings
19. Utilize LCD projector or overheads for IEP’s (reduces paper/copier usage)
20. Allow businesses to advertise on fields and buses
21. Reduce one academic team at middle school
22. Change to a more traditional schedule at the high school

23. Reduce the number of elective classes (increase class size)
24. Do not replace employees who retire
25. Freeze people on the salary scale - no lateral movement
26. Share AP courses with neighboring districts
27. Four day school week - adding 1.5 hours/day

30. Power shut off on TV’s (they continue to draw power even they are turned off)
31. Turn off announcements on tv’s during the day (saves electricity)

40. Boost incentive to get folks off insurance (especially retirees)
41. Look at set points of heat in the winter and summer (68° in winter/72° in summer)
42. Reduce the number of vans (economize)
43. Offer an early retirement incentive
44. Permit staff to work part-time in order to stay home with children
45. Bangor Park Stadium (reduce amount paid)
46. Eliminate yearbooks at elementary level
47. Eliminate after-school bus transportation
48. Allow students who are eligible to graduate in January
49. Give athletes physical education credits in grades 7 to 12
50. Eliminate middle school sports that are offered in the community
51. Collaborate with NCC for dual enrollment courses
52. Utilize volunteers where/when possible
53. Reduce cracks around doors and windows
