We must now use
the micrometer
knob to zero the
micrometer
Note that setting
the exterior zero
mark has gotten us
close to a zero in
the Hz window

Zeroing 1
Turn the micrometer knob till we get >

Zeroing 2
Turn the upper slow

screw till we get
coincidence >>>

Now the horizontal circle is zeroed and we

need to carry this reading to our BS
Zeroing 3
The upper horizontal lock
clamps the alidade and the

Point the
telescope in the
general direction
of our BS target

BS 1
We may use the
peep sight to get
close

BS 2 peep sight
The target is in view and we
now need to lock the lower
clamp and use the lower
slow motion screw to put the
cross hairs on our target

We may also lock the Vertical

clamp and use the Vertical slow
motion if we wish to control the
up and down motion

Cross hair close BS 1

<Lower lock

We are now sighted in on our BS
target with zero on our circle

Cross hair on Bs 1
The knobs 4

We should now
unlock the upper
clamp

So that we can turn

over the circle and
point to the FS target

Upper Lock/Clamp>

FS 1

Turn to the FS
get close with the
peep sight

Lock the upper FS target >

get an accurate <micrometer

reading the vertical

FS 2

Using the
peep sight
Close to target we may now
use the upper horizontal slow
motion screw and the vertical
slow motion screw to get on
target

Cross Hair close FS 1

Are the cross hairs on target
You be the judge

Cross Hair on FS 1
We now need to
adjust the
micrometer knob
to accomplish
reading

FS 1 H mic 1
Turning the knob

FS 1 H mic 2
1) Do we have 3) Now to get V
coincidence ? You be reading we need to
the judge! readjust the
micrometer knob
To get coincidence
in the v window

2) Hz Reading = 39°47’03” Do you agree?

FS 1 H mic 3
The vertical
circle readings
are referenced to
gravity
And the T1 has
an Auto
Compensator
So we do not
have to adjust
any bubbles
before reading
like we might
have to on some
other
instruments

Auto compensator 1
Auto compensator 2
Looks a little fuzzy –
maybe we should have
adjusted the micrometer
focus
Do we have coincidence in
the v box?

V Reading = 92°25’00” Do you agree ?

FS 1 V mic 1

plunge the

we can carry

Hz reading to
the BS

Using the
peep sight to
get close to
the BS

RF BS 2 peep sight
Lock the lower clamp and use the
lower slow motion screw to precisely
acquire the BS target

You should now be on the

target and the Hz value
should not have changed

RF BS cross hair on
We can now
unclamp the
upper lock
knob and turn
the telescope
to point in
the direction
of our FS
target
RF FS 2 rough sight
Using the peep sight

RF FS 2 peep sight
With the upper clamp
now locked use the upper
slow motion tangent
screw to precisely acquire
the FS target in RF

RF FS 2 cross hair
We must now
turn the
micrometer knob
until the double
lines in the Hz
box are bisected
by the single
degree line from
the horizontal
circle

RF FS mic 1
There does this look
like we have
coincidence?

If so our Hz reading is 79°33’56” Do you agree?

Now lets reduce our observations are they reasonable?
RF FS mic 2
We then readjusted the
micrometer knob to get a
reading on the vertical
circle.
Perhaps we could have
done a better job of setting
coincidence?
But we will take our
reading anyway (for
demonstration purposes).

V reading = 267°35’03” Do you agree?
