INTRODUCTION:
• Augmented reality: Increasing reality by adding virtual objects
to it.

• Augmented reality adds graphics, sounds, heptics and smell to

the natural world as it exists.

• AR supplements reality, rather than completely replacing it.

• AR is the middle ground of Virtual Environment and

Telepresence.
WHY AUGMENTED REALITY??
• What makes augmented reality different is how
the information is presented: Not on a separate
display but integrated with the user's perceptions.

• The virtual objects display information that the

user cannot directly detect with one’s own senses.

• Uses the computer as a tool to make a task easier

for a human to perform.
METHODOLOGY:

An augmented reality system is one that

• Combines real and virtual objects in a real

environment.

• Runs interactively, and in real time.

• Registers real and virtual objects with each other.

IMPLEMENTATION

Find user’s location Generate data

Find user’s orientation (view) Augment generated

data to user’s view
COMPONENTS OF AR:
The components of an augmented reality system are:

• Display HMD: Optical and Video see-through.

Projection display.

• Tracking and orientation devices: GPS.

• Portable computer: Palm and pocket PCs.

Tracking & Orientation
TRACKING AND ORIENTATION
• The biggest challenge facing developers of
augmented reality is the need to know where the user
is located in reference to his or her surroundings.
• There's also the additional problem of tracking the
movement of users' eyes and heads.

• AR system needs to know location of the user and

where he is looking.
TRACKING AND ORIENTATION
• Global Positioning System.

• Accuracy of GPS- about 10 to 30

meters.
• Augmented reality needs accuracy
measured in millimeters or smaller.

• A method of increasing accuracy is

using multiple GPS signals.
• A more accurate system being
developed, known as real-time
kinematic GPS, can achieve
centimeter-level accuracy. GPS Network
PORTABLE COMPUTER

• Wearable computers, Palm and pocket PCs.

• A wearable computer is a battery powered computer system

worn on the user’s body(belt, backpack etc).

• It is designed for mobile & predominantly hand free

operations often incorporating head mounted display &
speech input.
APPLICATIONS:
MEDICAL: ROBOTIC PATH
PLANNING:
APPLICATIONS:
ANNOTATION AND ENGINEERING
VISUALISATION: DESIGN:
LIMITATIONS:

• Accurate tracking and orientation

• For wearable augmented reality system, there are still

enough computing power to create stereo 3D
graphics

• The size of AR systems is yet another problem.

FUTURE HOLD:
• Aircraft manufacturing.
• Combat aircraft with Helmet Mounted Sights with graphics
registered to targets in the environment.
• Common usage in medical training.
• Replacement of cell phones: eye dialing, insertion of
information directly into environment.
• Virtual conferences in "holodeck" style .
• Examples might be a virtual wall clock, a to-do list for the day
docked by your bed for you to look at first thing in the
morning, etc.
CONCLUSION
• The research topic "Augmented Reality" (AR) is receiving
significant attention due to striking progress in many subfields
triggered by the advances in computer miniaturization, speed,
and capabilities and fascinating live demonstrations.
• AR, by its very nature, is a highly inter-disciplinary field, and
AR researchers work in many areas such as signal processing,
computer vision, graphics, user interfaces, human factors, etc.
• It has many applications and this technology makes human
effort lesser up to a large extent. Several areas of research are
still unexplored. This makes AR a vibrant field of research for
atleast the next several years.
