Barrett, The Honors College at ASU Downtown Phoenix campus

5 positions available for 2011-12 academic year :

3) Residential College Peer Mentor
4) Residential College Peer Mentor
5) Residential College Peer Mentor/College Ambassador

The 4 Residential College Peer Mentors and 1 Residential College Peer Mentor/College Ambassador will
live in the Barrett Residential Community in Taylor Place and provide substantial support to all honors students
within this living and learning community. These students will gain valuable leadership training and experience
mentoring first year students as they adjust to university life. (see full description of duties below)

Residential College Peer Mentor: Job Description


(4 positions available for 2011-2012 academic year)
If selected as a 2011-2012 Residential College Peer Mentor you will be required to participate in the following:
Early move-in and Barrett Initial training orientation (August, week before official move-in, times and locations TBA)
Assist and plan ALL Barrett Resident Move-in and Welcome Week activities (August)
Monthly community staff meetings and monthly one-on-one meeting with coordinator

Additionally, the 2011-2012 Residential College Peer Mentor is responsible for the following:

Residential College Mentoring Duties:


Mentor a group of 15-20 new Barrett Freshmen living in the Barrett Downtown Residential Halls (“B-Town”)
Contact mentees via email 2 weeks prior to school start
Send encouragement and “check-in” emails throughout Fall semester
Plan at least one 1 hour activity with peer mentor group per month, throughout the entire academic year

Residential College Programming Duties:


Work with the Barrett Residential College Student Leader (RSCL) to create, coordinate, and implement academic, social, and
service/outreach events for the Barrett Downtown Residential College for both Fall and Spring semesters
Host monthly “chat and chill” sessions between Sunday 5pm and Thursday 12 am in Floor Lounge space or Community
study room.
Update Barrett Residential College Facebook site, Hall white board, floor digiboard
Create and publish promotional materials (flyers, handouts, brochures) for events, activities and/or workshops.

Recruiting & Advising Support duties:


Provide support to recruiting and advising mission. In collaboration with the Barrett Program Coordinator for Recruiting, student is
responsible for:
Serving as a Honors Devil for entire Academic year and assisting with recruiting functions (tours and lunch chats with
prospective students)

Essential Qualifications:
Current student in good standing within Barrett, The Honors College and in ASU- (must have completed at least one academic
year at ASU and in Barrett by August 2011)
Minimum 3.5 GPA
Successfully completed HON 171 with a grade of B or better
At least one semester living experience in a Barrett Residential College
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Must be flexible and motivated self starter
Must live in Barrett Housing in Taylor Place for the 2011-2012 academic year (Tower 2)
Compensation:
$1000 stipend ($500 for Fall 2011 semester, $500 for Spring 2012 semester)

(1 positions available for 2011-2012 academic year)

Host prospective students (of same gender) for overnight stay in personal “super single” residential room in Tower 1
Participate in SED's (Student Experience Days) for prospective students, including scheduling honors class visits ,
Downtown campus tours, and lunches with current students

Programming Scenario

If selected as the 2011-12 Residential College Peer Mentor or Residential College Peer Mentor/College Ambassador, you
must implement a series of events, programs, and activities designed to develop and foster a community for new Barrett
Downtown freshmen. There are approximately 75 residents in the Barrett Residential College and you have a budget of
$300. You have been asked to create a social event for the entire 75 students. “Social events” should be fun, engaging,
and allow for students to interact with each other in a non-academic setting. Try to connect them with the Downtown area
as much as possible. (Some examples are: Night at the Phoenix Art Museum, First Fridays Visits, Playstation
Tournaments in Wells Fargo Student Union)
