Is it possible to live to 125 or maybe 150?It’s certainly a possibility, as discussed onOprah Winfrey’s recent show on longevity. Shevisited me at my farm to learn how, at 86, Iam enjoying the robust health, energy, andmental creativity of someone many decadesyounger. My secret: large quantities of fruitand vegetables, plus an hour of daily exercise. No pills, not even aspirin, and certainlyno supplements ever enter my mouth-- everything I need comes from my
sh-vegetarian diet, which incorporates 30-40different kinds of fruit and vegetables everyweek. Even though I am Chairman and Ownerof Dole Food Company, I do most of my owngrocery shopping, and even took Oprah onan impromptu trip to Costco, in a day thatincluded bike riding, exercise in the gym,and juicing vegetables in the kitchen. Oprahmarveled at how much I eat, and yet nevergain a pound. In fact, I expend a lot of energyin my 50-60 minutes of cardio and strengthtraining every day. Plus there’s the fact thatfruit and vegetables tend to be lower incalories, but higher in
ber and othernutrients that help you feel satis
ed.By eating many fruits and vegetables in placeof fast food and junk food, people could avoidobesity. Obesity accelerates aging even fasterthan smoking, according to scienti
c research. We created the North Carolina ResearchCampus to study the health bene
ts of fruitsand vegetables. It is the only campus in theworld encompassing eight universities allworking together for the bene
t of healthand longevity. These include Duke University,UNC Chapel Hill, NC State University, UNCCharlotte, North Carolina Central University,NC A&T State University, UNC Greensboro andAppalachian State University. We’ve gathereda comprehensive array of famous scientistsand scienti
c equipment under one roof, including a two-story, 950 megahertz, 8-tonsuperconducting magnet. It is the largest andmost powerful magnet in the world and willhelp us look at both plant and human cellsat the most minute level. We are constantlydoing research on all fruit and vegetables, including the ones listed below, which are themainstay of my diet.
