An Operating System?
What is an Operating System?
An interface between users and hardware
A program that acts as an intermediary
between a user of a computer and the
computer hardware.
LAYERS OF A SYSTEM
An Operating System?
What is the purpose of an operating
system?
An environment "architecture”
To provide an environment in which a
user can execute programs.
An Operating System?
 What are the goals of an Operating
System?
Allows convenient & efficient usage to
make the computer system convenient to
use (hides the tedious stuff). &
Efficient to use (parallel activities, avoids
wasted cycles)
An Operating System?
 What are the goals of an Operating
System?
Provides information protection
Gives each user a slice of the resources
Acts as a control program.
An Operating System?
Hardware :
provides basic computing resources (CPU, memory, I/O
devices).
Operating system:
controls & coordinates the use of the hardware among the
various
application programs for the various users.
Applications programs :
Define the ways in which the system resources are used to solve
the computing problems of the users (compilers, database
systems, video games, business programs).
Users:
(people, machines, other computers).
Parts of an Operating System

Memory Management
IO Management
CPU Scheduling
IPC
MultiTasking/Multiprogramming
File System
Multimedia Support
GUI (X Windows, MS Win)
Internet Browser
MEMORY / STORAGE
Very fast storage is very
expensive.
So the Operating System manages a
hierarchy of storage devices in order to
make the best use of resources. In fact,
considerable effort goes into this support.
OPERATING SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Some Characteristics include:
Time Sharing: Multiprogramming
environment that's also interactive.
Multiprocessing: Tightly coupled
systems that communicate via shared
memory. Used for scientific applications.
Used for speed improvement by putting
together a number of off‐the‐shelf
processors.
OPERATING SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Distributed Systems:
Loosely coupled systems that
communicate via message passing.
Advantages include resource sharing,
speed up, reliability, communication.
Real Time Systems:
Rapid response time is main characteristic.
Used in control of applications where
rapid response to a stimulus is essential.
Step by step installation of O/S
Operating system installation
 Configuration
 Driver software installation
 Network configuration
Step by step installation of O/S
If you have to make the new Installation
of Windows XP. You can use this as guide
lines for the installation, these slides are
brief and step by step.
I am assuming that your system is able to
boot from CD‐ROM.
If it is not then it can be set in BIOS to
make CDROM is 1st Bootable device.
Step by step installation of O/S
Check in your BIOS that Booting from
CD‐ROM is enabled or first try to Boot
from CD‐ROM is Enabled.
Insert your licensed CD of Windows
XP,Windows 2000
Reset the Computer and you will see the
first Post screen.
Step by step installation of O/S
After a brief delay, the typical Microsoft
"blue Installation screen” is displayed,
with "Windows Setup" displayed at the
top and at the bottom of the screen the
information, that "Setup is loading Files“
(loading all type of device drivers):
Step by step installation of O/S
Itwill finally state :
“Setup is starting Windows” & will
display after a short delay the “Windows
XP Professional Setup” screen :
Step by step installation of O/S
If you install XP into an already existing
partition, you have additional options to
leave the current disk formatting intact).
Select the type of disk formatting : FAT or
NTFS
FAT: Possible to access from a DOS-boot
floppy, but limited to max. 4 GByte with
very inefficient file-storage (cluster-size
of 64 KByte), no Security features.
Step by step installation of O/S
NTFS: Not accessible from a DOS-boot
floppy, but NOT limited in size and using an
efficient filestorage with a small cluster-size,
able to use File-System Security features.
Windows XP requires a lot of disk-space for
itself, you should use at least a 4 G.Byte
partition. I suggest to use NTFS : make your
choice (highlight) and select it by pressing
ENTER.
Step by step installation of O/S
You can adjust regional settings for example
if you install an English version of Windows
XP in a different country and the keyboard
layout/language is not the same language as
your copy of Windows XP, you should use
the button "Customize..“ and configure the
proper keyboard, to make sure that you can
enter in the following steps of the
setup/installation properly the information
Step by step installation of O/S
Based on the organization (define above), Setup
creates a name for your computer, with complex
name “to make sure that the name will be unique
in a network configuration”. Since this name will
be used later inside the “My Network places”,
Change it to an easy to understand , but UNIQUE
name (like : LABPC2,LABPC3 etc ).
If you enter a password for the Administrator
Account, make sure that you remember it (to be
save, write it down ! ).
