3. Explain in two of three sentences why you have chosen this article.

4. Explain briefly in four or five sentences what the article is about.

This article is about how a large portion of the world’s languages, specifically
regional languages, are rapidly dying out to more dominant languages such as English,
Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. It also explains how languages reflect unique aspects of their
originator’s cultures. Also, the article attempts to illuminate the significance of regional
languages in certain sciences, including archeology, biology and the study of migration.
Lastly, several different ways and efforts of preservation are explained and the importance of
aforesaid language preservation is reiterated.

5. What is the writer’s message or purpose in writing this article?

The writer’s intentions seem to be to bring attention to the phenomenon of language


extinction and then convince the reader that this phenomenon has a dire and significant
effect. Additionally, the writer appears to want to inform the reader of the diversity of
regional languages and how well they can help us understand the culture to which the
language originated.

6. Give your personal comment on the article as a conclusion of your article review.

In my opinion the article should have explained in more detail why the phenomenon
of regional language extinction came to be and therefor help the reader understand and
formulate ways to prevent it. Also, I felt the article could have shown some of the positive
effects of language globalization such as easier access to education and economic
opportunities which will lower the hurdle for poverty stricken communities to gain fair
ground in global competition.
