Jere Gettle always had a passion for growing things andat age 3 he planted his rst garden. Ever since that day,he wanted to be involved in the seed industry. So at theage of 17, he printed the rst small Baker Creek Heir-loom Seed catalog in 1998. The company has grown tooffer 1,300 varieties of vegetables, owers and herbs— the largest selection of heirloom varieties in the U.S.A.Baker Creek carries one of the largest selections of seeds from the 19th century, including many Asian andEuropean varieties. The company has become a tool topromote and preserve our agricultural and culinary heri-tage. Our company and seeds have been featured in TheNew York Times, The Associated Press, Oprah Maga-zine, Martha Stewart, and many others. Gardeners canrequest a free 132-page color catalog that now mails toover 250,000 gardeners nationally.Baker Creek started hosting festivals in 2000 as anidea to bring gardeners, homesteaders and natural foodenthusiasts together to exchange thoughts, seeds, listento speakers and enjoy vendors, old-time music and muchmore. These festivals gave birth to the idea for our pio-neer village, Bakersville. Other projects include our trialgardens, seed collecting expeditions, our popular onlineforums at idigmygarden.com and educational produceexhibits.Over the last several years, Jere Gettle and his wifeEmilee have branched out into other related projects aswell, including The Heirloom Gardener magazine, whichis now in its seventh year of publication. They have alsoexpanded to a location in Sonoma County, California, inthe beautiful town of Petaluma. Their most recent projectis the restoration and preservation of the Wetherseld,Connecticut landmark, Comstock, Ferre & Company, the oldest continuously operating seed company in NewEngland.
