Peritoneum

Description:

Peritoneum is the serous membrane that lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities and invests
the viscera. It consists of parietal layer that lines the abdominopelvic wall and a visceral layer
that invest the viscera. Parietal peritoneum is innervated by the nerve that innervates the
region of the wall it lines whereas visceral peritoneum is innervated by the same nerve that
supplies the organ that it covers.

Question:

Students should read the given references and understand the reflection of peritoneum and its
clinical importance in various pathological conditions of the abdomen and pelvis. They
should then write a synopsis which includes: a) Sub-divisions of peritoneal cavity b)
Peritoneal Recesses, spaces and gutters and its clinical importance c) Clinical importance of
the innervations of peritoneum in relation to pathological conditions of the abdomen. Please
do NOT LESS than 300 and NOT MORE than 500.
