UNFCCC negotiations are currently struggling to get big polluters to raise their ambitions. After the failed climate summit in Copenhagen in 2009, the major polluters all offered their 2020 pledges, and now the UNFCCC process tries to "formalize" these and make them legally binding. But a close look at what those pledges mean in terms of per capita emissions in 2020 reveals that few of the pledges are in line with science, which demands zero emissions in 2050 in order to reach the goal of limiting warming to maximum 1.5°C. The average per capita emissions for the period 2010-2050 need to be below 3 tons. So if you look at the numbers, only Maldives, Costa Rica and Monaco are on track so far. Raising ambitions, not emissions will stay the name of the game for some time!
