Asacongressman,senatorandone-timeDemocraticnomineeforthepresidency,I'veparticipatedinmyshareofvigorouspublicdebatesoverissuesofgreatconsequence.AndthepublichasbeenfreetoacceptorrejectthedecisionsImadewhentheywalkedintoaballotbooth,drewthecurtainandcasttheirvote.Ididn'talwayswin,butIalwaysrespectedtheprocess.Votingisanimmenseprivilege.ThatiswhyIamconcernedaboutanewdevelopmentthatcoulddenythisfreedomtomanyAmericans.Asalongtimefriendoflaborunions,ImustraisemyvoiceagainstpendinglegislationIseeasadisturbingandundemocraticoverreachnotintheinterestofeithermanagementorlabor.ThelegislationiscalledtheEmployeeFreeChoiceAct,andIamsadtosayitrunscountertoidealsthatwereonceatthecoreofthelabormovement.Insteadofprovidingavoicefortheunheard,EFCAriskssilencingthosewhowouldspeak.ThekeyprovisionofEFCAisachangeinthemechanismbywhichunionsareformedandrecognized.Insteadof
