Stormwater Velocity Labels
AutoCAD Civil 3D and the Hydraflow Storm Sewer program implemented a data transfer mechanism thatprovides some hydraulic calculation results provided by Hydraflow back to Civil 3D. Two of those results arethe Hydraulic Grade Line and Energy Grade Line calculation results. This short paper outlines a way to calculate the upstream and downstream velocity values based off theresulting returning values of the EGL and HGL values. Unfortunately, the EGL value is imported via the STMfile format only. LandXML does not contain the EGL results for Pipes.A quick primer: The HGL or Hydraulic Grade Line is the elevation of the water within the pipe network system.[Actually, the HGL can be above the crown of the pipe. This signifies that the pipe is under pressure.] TheEnergy Grade Line is the Hydraulic Grade Line value plus an energy component. The Energy Component iscalled the Velocity Head and is represented by:
To reorder to solve for V, or Velocity, the equation goes like this:
In an Equation that Civil 3D can recognize:
So, let¶s create that label in a step by step fashion:

Open Civil 3d This works in 2010, 2011 and in 2012 versions.2.
