INFERIORITY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES IN INDONESIAN NATIONAL EDUCATION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY AMONG 8 SCHOOLS IN GREATER JAKARTA AREA BASED ON GESTALT PSYCHOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE COSMONOMIC IDEA (DE WIJSBEGEERTE DER WETSIDEE)
(xiv + 129 pages: 1 picture; 2 attachments)

In Indonesian schools social sciences are considered inferior to the natural sciences. This study would examine whether this inferiority of the social sciences in Indonesia takes place because the act of schooling is administered to ensure students’ readiness to work, but forget that humans are not merely economic beings. There are other aspects within each human being which also need to be sharpened but apparently ignored by the education system in Indonesia. According to Gestalt Psychology, human experience tends to be meaningful and complete, while according to Dooyeweerd’s Philosophy of the Cosmonomic Idea, there are 15 aspects of human experience – all of which needs to be developed by education so people can experience their lives in full. This study is conducted by doing interviews to 2 teachers and 2 students in each of 6 national schools and 2 international schools in greater Jakarta area, each school having a particular set of characteristics so as to enable this study to come up with a certain picture of each distinct school’s view of their own education system. The German school is found to use a holistic approach and an integrated hidden curriculum to produce independent and responsible students while the French school combines the social sciences and natural sciences in a synergistic manner to produce students who have a strong sense of nationality and communality as French people. If the Indonesian government is serious about achieving the goal of national education it has prescribed, it is necessary to use both a strategic pattern of thought and strategion actions to take advantage of each sciences’ unique nature to help us attach value to our life experiences and shape a public space we want to achieve together, a democratic country and a highly civilized nation. It is found that neither the natural sciences nor social sciences an sich is an important consideration factor in selecting studies, but the main factors are the character formation gained during the study and the diploma obtained after the study.
