hileDeanisawaytheKatwillplay.ImustsaythelasttwoissuesthatIhaveworkedonhavebeenmuchfun.Butthisspecialissuecertainlytakesthecatnipintermsofexcitingsubjectmatter.ThisissueisaspecialcommemorationtooneofKansasCity'slongestsurvivingjazzclub-Milton's-whichcloseditsdoorsthispastsummer.Thoughitgaveaheftyfighttobringinlivejazznightly,thesupportafter
its
moveto39th&SouthwestTrafficwayjustwasnotthere.Whenitclosed,fewpeoplenoticed.YetmanyrecallthelegacyitcontributedtoJazz.OneofthosepeopleisChuckHaddixwhohasbeencontributinghisvastknowledgetoourjazzhistorycolumn.Chuckisknownprimarilyasaradio/partierpersonalitywithhis"SaturdayNightFishFry"onKCUR,andsecondlyasaseriousacademicianwiththeMarrSoundArchives.HewasalsoaclosefriendofMiltonMorris.MorrisfoundedMilton'swhichaddedlifeandcolortotheKansasCityjazzlegacy,evenduringthedrab70s.HiscoverstoryonMilton'sisatreasuredoneandveryclosetohisheart.(''Thiswasverydifficulttowrite,Kathy"heemphasized.)BecauseMiltontouchedsomanylivesanddeservedtobememorializedinsomemanner,wetouchedon
it
indifferentarticles.Wethinkyouwillwanttokeepthisissueforquitesometime..Inaddition,wewishtomemorializethepassingofBillyMoore,whowasinhimselfajazzinstitution.Billycouldalwaysbeseendressedratherdapperly
atany
jazzcluborfestivaldancingwiththeyoungladies.HeoftentoldstoriesofhisfatherwhowasamusicianintheHermanWalderband.Helovedjazzandtowardtheend,wrappedhislifearound
it.
