SOME IMPORTANT ISLAMIC ETHICS

INTRODUCTION :

A Muslim is expected to conduct himself in the best manner, at all times,


under all circumstances, and in all places. This section attempts to select
some of the most common but important etiquettes that a Believer should
observe. Observing proper Islamic ethics not only prevent undesired
consequences; it also generates great rewards and benefits. Though not
exhaustive, a selection of these essential ethics are presented under two
section : important ethics from the Quraan and important Islamic ethics from
the Sunnah.

IMPORTANT ISLAMIC ETHICS FROM THE QURAAN:

1. Do not Mix truth with falsehood

And Mix Truth with falsehood, nor the truth knowingly ( Surah
Al- Baqarah, 2 : 42 ).

2. Seek Help Through Patience and Prayer

And seek assistance through patience and prayer, and this is


hard except for the humble ones ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:45 ).

3. Do not Ridicule Those Killed in the Way of Allah

And speak not of those who are killed in the way of Allah as
Dead.Nay, they are alive but you perceive not ( Surah Albaqarah,
2: 154 ).

4. What to do when a misfortune Occurs

Say: ‘ We are from Allah and to Him we shall return’ (Surah al-
Baqarah, 2:156 ).

5. What is piety
It is not piety that you turn your faces towards the East and
the West, but piety is the one who believe in Allah, and the Last
Day, and the angels, and the Book, and the Prophets, and gives
away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the
orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask and
to set slaves free, and keeps up prayer, and pays the poor-rate, and
the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and
the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflict. These
are they who are the truthful; and these are they who keep their
duty ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 177 ).

6. Wealthy Muslims Must Make a Will before Death

It is prescribed for you, when death approaches one of you, if he


Leaves wealth for parents and near relatives, to make a bequest
( will ) in a kindly manner; it is incumbent upon the dutiful ( Surah
Al-Baqarah, 2 : 180 ).

7. Jihad is Incumbent on Muslims

Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you
But do not transgress. Surely Allah loves not the aggressors.
( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2 : 190 ).

8. Submit Completely to Allah

O you who believes, enter into complete submission and


follow not the footsteps of the devil. Surely he is your open
enemy ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2 : 208; see also Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:90 ).

9. Shun Intoxicants and Games of Chance

They ask thee about intoxicants and games of chance


( gambling ). Say : In both of them is a grat sin and ( some )
Advantage for men, and their sin is greater than their
advantage ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2 : 219 ).

10. Do not have sex During Menstruation


And they ask thee about menstruation. Say : It is harmful; so keep
aloof from women during menstrual discharge and go not near them ( do not
have sexual intercourse with them ) until they are clean ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:222 ).

11. Do not Make Allah the Cause of Not Doing Good

And make not Allah by your oaths a hindrance to your doing good and
keeping your duty and making peace between men. And Allah is Hearing,
Knowing ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2 :224 ).

12.Suckle Your Children

And mothers shall suckle their children for 2years, for him who desires
to complete the time of suckling ( Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:233 ).

13.Widows Must Wait Four Months and Ten Days before Re-
marrying

And ( as for ) those of you who die and leave wives behind, such women
should keep themselves in waiting for four months and ten days ( Iddat )(
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2 :234 ).

14.There is no Compulsion in Religion

There is no compulsion in religion _ the right way is indeed clearly


distinct from error. So whoever disbelievers in the devil and believes in
Allah, he indeed lays hold on the firmest handle which shall never break.
And Allah is Hearing, Knowing ( surah Al-Baqarah,2 :256 ).

15. Do not Insult Someone whom You have Given Charity

A kind of word with forgiveness is better than charity followed by


injury. And Allah is Self-sufficient, Forbearing. O you who believe, make
Not your charity worthless by reproach and injury, like him who spends his
wealth to be seen of men and believes not in Allah and the Last Day ( Surah
Al-Baqarah, 2 :263-264 ).
