Theprogram'sinitiatorsbelievedthatelementarystudentsarecapableofmuchmorethanwenormallyaskofthem,andthesubsequentsuccessof
Superstars
indicatesthatmanychildrenareonthepathtobecomingindependentlearners.Anumberofchildrenin
any
classroomarebright,energetic.andwillingtoacceptextrachallenges..Thebasicpurposeofthe
Superstars
programistoprovidetheextrachallengethatself-motivatedstudentsneed
in
mathematics.andtodoso

astructured,long-termprogramthatdoesnotimpingeonthenormalclassroomroutineorthetimeoftheteacher.Thesystem
is
notmeanttoreplaceanyaspectoftheschoolcurriculum--it
is
offeredasaperipheralopportunitytostudentswhoidentifywithchallengesandwhowanttoberewardedfortheirextraeffort.Participation
in
theprogramisalwaysoptional-onlythosestudentswhovoluntarilychoosetoparticipatewill,

Superstars-
havedemonstratedthatthisconceptcanbeextremelysuccessful.Whatisrequiredareseveraldedicatedadultswhodevoteafewhourseachweek
to
operatethesystemeffectively
in
theschool;anadministratorwhoprovideshighlyvisiblesupport;teacherswhowelcomeasupplementaryexperiencefortheirstudentstoengage
in
higher-orderthinking;andatypicalclassroomofstudents.
