The five poorest states in Peru are: Huancavelica (74%), Huánuco (61%) Cusco (49%), Cajamarca (50.8%)
and Apurimac (47%). These numbers are for extreme poverty

The five states with smallest numbers for extreme poverty are: Lima (3%), Tacna (5%), Moquegua ( 7%)
and Ica (8.6%)

Average age for the head of the family is 46.5 years, whereas in homes which are not poor is slightly
higher at 49.1 years.

Poor families lead person usually have a lower educational level where 66.7% have completed only one
year of schooling at best; 21.1% do work in at least two jobs. 87.2% do not have a job and work in what
is nominally the ͞informal͟ sector of the economy, where no regular employment is the rule.

Poor homes average 5.3 members while not poor homes average only 3.8. From those members, 40.4%
are younger than 15 years of age in the poor homes and 22.1% in the not poor homes.

63.9% of the poorest individuals work on their own, while in not poor homes 62% have employment.

Public utilities: electricity is available to 52% of poor homes and drinking water only to 46% of them.

Salaries: Most of the population are peasant farmers with no salary nor social security . Those who are
salaried farmers are paid less than two dollars per work day.

From a total of 17,000 farming units, only 1,400 have year round farming, and from these, 1,000 are for
auto-consumption for survival only. Besides agriculture, ¼ of individuals add craftsmanship activities and
1/3 additional services within agriculture needs. That means 2/3 of the economically active populations
is related to agribusiness and 1/5 of those into services.

Only 12.5% of the population enjoys sewer services, the lowest by far in the country. One half of
women older than 15 years cannot read or write. 40% of the total population has Kechwan as first
language.

HEALTH: highest child mortality in the country, 110/1000 newborns while in Peru the average is
40/1000. (in USA is 7/1000).

Huancavelica has only 35 health professionals per 10,000 inhabitants where as the national average is
159.

Life expectancy in the area only reaches to 50 years of age. In Lima, the capital, it is 71 years.
