INTRODUCTIONANDMISSIONOBJECTIVESTheSTS-5SpaceShuttleProgramMissionReportprovidesanoverviewofthemajoractivi-ties,accomplishments,andfindingsofthefirstoperationalflightbasedonaprelim-inaryreviewandanalysisoftheflightdata.WiththesuccessfulcompletionofSTS-5,theOrbiter(OV-102)willbetemporarilyremovedfromtheflightprogramsothatmodifica-tionsmaybemadeinpreparationforthefirstSpacelabmission(STS-9).TheprimarymissionobjectiveofSTS-5,asdefinedintheFlightRequirementsDocument(JSC17462-05),wastosuccessfullydeploytheSBSandANIK-Cpayloads.Tofurtherthisobjective,afirstdaydeploymentwasincorporatedintotheflightdesign.Anadditionalobjectivewastoperformanextravehicularactivity,butproblemswiththeEMU's(extra-vehicularmobilityunit)causedcancellationofthistask.Theresultsoftheinvestiga-tionoftheEMUanomaliesarereportedintheSTS-5MissionAnomalyReportofExtravehic-ularMobilityUnitAnomalies(JSC-18698).MISSIONSUMMARYTheSTS-5missionwaslaunchedonNovember11,1982at12:18:59.997G.m.t.,andlandedNovember16,1982atEdwardsAFB,CA.ThesequenceofeventsforthisflightislistedinTableI-I.ThecrewforthisfirstcommercialsatellitedeploymentmissionwasVanceD.Brand,Commander;ColonelRobertF.Overmyer,Pilot;andWilliamB.Lenoir,Ph.D.,andJosephP.AllenIV,Ph.D.,MissionSpecialists.AllDTO/DSOtestobjectivesoftheflightweresuccessfullycompletedexceptfortheextravehicularactivitywhichwascancelledbecauseofextravehicularmobilityunitproblems.Theascentphasewasnominalwithallsystemsoperatingnearpredictedlevels.Themainpropulsionsystemandtheexternaltanksystemsoperatedproperlywithnoanomaliesnotedineithersystem.Thesolidrocketbooster(SRB)performancewasslightlybelowpredic-tions.ThesolidrocketboosterrecoverysystemsoperatedproperlyandtheSRB'sweretowedtoport.ThetrajectoryparametersatMECO(mainenginecutoff)werenominalandtheperformanceofthemainpropulsionsystemandmainengineswasalsosatisfactory.TheresultantorbitalparametersafterthefirstandsecondOMS(orbitalmaneuveringsystem)maneuverswere160.2by160.1nmi.,comparedwiththeplanned160nmi.circularorbit.ThefirstdayofSTS-5wascharacterizedbythesuccessfuldeploymentat315:20:18:00G.m.t.oftheSBS(SatelliteBusinessSystem)communicationssatelliteanditwassuccess-fullyboostedintoageosynchronousorbitonNovember13,1982.AnOMS3burnwasper-formedtoprovideasafeseparationdistancebetweenthePAM-Dmotorplumeandtheorbi-ter.Also,theGAS(getawayspecial)experimentwasactivated.Thecrewreportedoneanomalyonthefirstday.ThatwasthefailureofCRT-2(cathoderaytube).ThegroundprovidedaprocedureforswitchingcablesonDEU's(displayelectronicunit)2and4.Thecableswitchinginflightmaintenanceprocedurewassuccess-fullyperformedonthefourthdayandthisrestorednormaloperationtoCRT-2ontheforwarddeckanddisabledCRT-4ontheaftdeckwhichwasnotrequiredforentry.Onday2,theTelesat(ANIK-C)satellite(secondcommercialpayload)deploymentoccurredat316:20:24:11G.m.t.ThissatellitewasboostedintoageosynchronousorbitonNovember16,1982.TwoOMS(orbitalmaneuveringsystem)maneuvers(OMS-4and-5)wereperformedinpreparationforthesecondsatellitedeploymentandonemaneuver(OMS-6)wasmadeafterthedeploymenttoprovideasafeseparationdistancefromthePAM-DmotorplumeontheTelesatsatellite.
