Software as a Service - SaaS isn’t new. The concept of application sharing and hosting goes back to the big iron days and has proved a reliable way to deliver certain apps—in fact, most of the airline industry has used a hosted reservation model for more than 20 years. The recent resurgence of SaaS can be attributed to multiple factors, including increased bandwidth, next-generation Web technologies and applications, and major players that have brought not only brand awareness but development dollars to the table.

The faithful will shout: All software can be provided as a service. Great mantra, but CIOs are realists. Our InformationWeek survey shows that more than 50% of organizations are either running one or more enterprise applications as a service or are considering doing
so.
