CERES - Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies, is an award winning,
not-for-profit, environment and education centre and urban farm located by the Merri Creek in
East Brunswick, Melbourne.
Built on a decommissioned municipal tip that was once a landfill and wasteland, today CERES is
a thriving, vibrant community. Over 300,000 people visit CERES each year. Many more connect
with us through our innovative program taking sustainable education directly to schools across
the State.
Community groups such as the Bike Shed, Community Gardens and Chook Group that call
CERES home are also vital to CERES culture.
All waste and water on the site is recycled and much of the site is powered by renewable energy
such as wind and solar.
CERES is now working towards making the site completely carbon neutral by 2012.
CERES is a model for a possible future where innovation, sustainability, equity and
connectedness are valued. Both as a place and a community, CERES is striving to create a new
way of being.
With great joy we would like to announce that CERES has a new green building complex located
at the entrance of the site!
There are 3 new buildings comprising meeting rooms, a new organic restaurant - The Merri
Table & Bar, staff offices, a new visitor centre and nursery. The complex has been designed by
Gregory Burgess Architects and integrates state of the art sustainable design and materials.
The Centre has been named in honour of the Van Raay family who were the major donors
alongside the following partners who have made this building possible. Our great thanks to you
all.
The building project is waiting on further funding to be completed. Its final stage will involve the
main hall and foyer, studios, green room and community workshop spaces.
The Autumn Harvest Festival celebrates the abundance of the harvest. The tomatoes and
zucchini are slowing down, the air is getting crisper but it is the perfect time for pumpkin.
The Harvest Festival is also a celebration of the achievements of the CERES organic farm. Our
Merri Creek plot has been a market garden for over 150 years so we continue a long and proud
tradition. The Autumn Harvest Festival gives thanks to nature for her bounty and the wonder that
is the cycle of the seasons. Food, music and the exchange of ideas make for a wonderful
celebration.
We welcome the return of the Kingfisher with music dance food and celebration. The Kingfisher
is our symbol of renewal and hope. In 2009 the festival commissioned a new puppet constructed
from cane and cloth who will grace the festival for years to come.
Green Technology
Green Technologies deal with our water, waste and energy in sustainable ways, and are designed
using the best of current science and engineering knowledge along with a detailed understanding
of natural ecological processes.
The Green Technology team at CERES works to design and install working demonstrations of
innovative green technologies, each project is selected based on the reliability of the technology
and the ease with which individuals, communities, industry and government can adopt them.
Most of the Green Technology projects at CERES also support the other enterprises on site, such
as the cafe's composting toilets, the Van Raay Centre's energy efficient lighting and the Eco
House's solar hotwater system.
All CERES Green Technology projects are designed to be working demonstrations or on going
research projects, and can be viewed on site, or during guided tours.
From local seeds we propagate, plant, grow, harvest, produce, sell and share a bounty of organic,
locally grown produce because deep down we all want to be farmers.
Getting food to our tables is the largest single contributor of human created greenhouse gases;
growing, transporting, storing, packing, cooking and disposing of food is responsible for over
30% of CO2 emissions. The CERES Community Food System is a working collection of farms,
seed and food swaps, ethical retail businesses that train, employ and connect diverse groups of
people through locally grown organic food.
Our mission is to demonstrate how an urban city farm can anchor a community and contribute to
the local economy; providing an ethical market place, employment and opportunities for farmers,
producers, teachers and food workers in an environment where we can celebrate the harvest.
