toexpress
our
support
for
redistricting
reform.We
share
your
view
that
New
York
mustestablish
an
independent
redistricting
commission
that
would
draw
state
legislative
and
congressional
district
boundaries
according
to
fair
and
reasonable
criteriawhile
allowingfor
meaningful
and
effective
publicparticipation
in
theprocess.
We
appreciate
yourcommitment
to
ensure
that
redistricting
reform
affects
the
2012elections,
as
demonstrated
by
your
February
17th
introduction
of
the
RedistrictingReform
Act
of
2011
and
in
your
2010
campaign
policy
book,
The
New
NYAgenda:
A
Plan
for
Action.
To
underscore
our
commitment
to
this
shared
vision,
we
stronglysupport
your
decisionto
veto
any
district
lines
drawnwithout
the
fair
and
objective
criteria
contained
inyour
legislation.
We
commit
to
oppose
any
effort
to
override
your
veto
if
such
an
effort
is
advanced
in
the
Senate.
Putsimply,
we
will
not
voteto
override
your
veto.
We
also
strongly
support
redistrictingreform
legislation
that
adherestothe
following
principles:
The
creation
of
a
new
fair
and
objective
redistricting
process
that
creates
congressional
and
legislative
district
lines
that
do
not
favor
or
opposeany
incumbentor
political
party
and
are
drivenby
fair
and
objective
criteria
containedin
the
RedistrictingReform
Act
of
2011.
This
legislation
containseven-handed
and
sensible
redistricting
guidelines
and
criteria
that
providefor
fair
and
effective
representation
of
all
NewYorkers,
including
racial
and
language
minority
groups
and
would
significantly
lower
the
overall
currentpopulation
deviationfrom
ten
percent.
Ensureadequate
disclosure
of
population
dataand
opportunities
forpublic
input
into
redistricting
proceedings.
