The elements of a PLOT are:

a. The Exposition- the situation within which the conflict develops, information that tells why
and how the characters have become involved in this situation. The exposition is frequently
delayed until after the conflict has started and then given bit by bit.

b. The Initiating Action- the event which brings the opposing forces into conflict; the moment
which catches the reader’s or the audience’s attention.

c. The Rising Action – the separate events which advance the conflict; the problems faced by the
characters.

d. The Climax – the crucial point at which the protagonist in the conflict takes, consciously or
unconsciously, the action which determines the future course of the conflict. It is the point of
highest interest and it triggers the highest emotional response in the reader or audience.

e. The Denouement or resolution – the incidents in which the conflict caused by the Initiating
Action is resolved. The plot may be considered as un upward spiral because, in most cases, the
resolution of the conflict returns us to a situation similar to, but not exactly the same as that
presented in the exposition.
