Alison Blake is a 12-year-old American. She lives on the edge of the desert in the near-future. Her dad is a doctor, her mum used to work in the music business and now makes wacky desert sculptures. She has a 13-year-old brother called Lincoln, who is autistic and obsessed with the pauses in famous rock songs. Alison feels her dad doesn't understand Lincoln. Her mum annoys her. In this book, kids of the future don't write diaries in the normal way but record what's happening in their lives in PowerPoint slides.

Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad is on the longlist for the Orange prize for women's fiction and we think it's a bit special. So we asked her if we could run Alison's diary on the website and ask you what you think of it. It's only one chapter in the novel, but you can read it as a short story about a girl and her family.

Do you think it works to write a story in PowerPoint?

What do you think about Alison's mum and dad?
