Unequal access to public accommodations has been a common historicaltheme covered by the Black Press; the
AFRO
has certainly written more than itsshare. From “colored only” water fountains and “back of the bus” seating tounder-funded urban school districts and biased and unfair lendingpractices, African-Americans have always had to fight for what should beguaranteed rights.Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. We’re a long way from Jim Crowlaws and practices now. There have been many achievements along the way,but we are still far from being a truly equal society. Our most recent reminderwas, hands down, the treatment of Hurricane Katrina survivors. To think thatthousands of African-American citizens are still without homes and services tomeet their needs shows that race and class are still uppermost in the hearts andminds of the powers that be in this country. In 2004, the
AFRO
observed the 50-year anniversary of the
Brown v. Board of Education
decision with a historic look at the legal fight(s) that led to the ulti-mate victory. This compilation, a follow up to the
Road to Brown
, highlights the next stepstaken once the taste of victory assured there was more to come.It is our hope that through this publication, readers will appreciate even morethe strides we’ve made, but also understand the battle is far from over.Read and learn,Jake Oliver,
