INTRODUCTIONANDMISSIONOBJECTVESTheSTS51-GNationalSTS(SpaceTransportationSystems)ProgramMissionReportcontainsasummaryofthemajoractivitiesandaccomplishmentsoftheeighteenthSpaceShuttleflightandthefifthflightoftheOV-103vehicle,Discovery.TheprimaryobjectivesoftheSTS51-GflightweretosuccessfullydeploytheTELSTAR-3D/PAM-D(PayloadAssistModule-D),MORELOS-A/PAM-D,andARABSAT-A/PAM-Dsatellites;toconductthedeploymentandretrievaloperationsoftheSPARTAN1;andtoperformtheoperationsoftheADSF(AutomatedDirectionalSolidificationFurnace),FPE(FrenchPostureExperiment),andFEE(FrenchEchocardigraphExper-iment).ThesequenceofeventsforthisflightisshownintableI.Theprol-lemtrackinglistfortheOrbiterispresentedintableIItoprovideacompletelistofallflight-associatedproblemsthatoccurred.MISSIONSUMMARYTheSTS51-Gfinalcountdownproceededverysmoothlywithnounplannedholds.Lift-offoccurredat168:11:33:00G.m.t.(07:33a.m.,e.d.t.,June17,1985)fromlaunchcomplex39AatKSC(KennedySpaceCenter)withasatisfactorylandingat175:13:11:57G.m.t.(June24,1985)atEdwardsAirForceBase,California.ThecrewforSTS51-GwasDanielC.Brandenstein,Capt.,U.S.Navy,Commander;JohnO.Creighton,Cdr.,U.S.Navy,Pilot;StevenR.Nagel,Lt.Col.,U.S.AirForce,JohnM.Fabian,Col.,U.S.AirForce,andShannonW.Lucid,Ph.D.,Miss-ionSpecialists;andPatrickBaudryandSultanSalmanAl-Saud,PayloadSpecial~ists.PatrickBaudrywasarepresentativeofCNESandSultanSalmanAl-SaudwasarepresentativeofARABSAT.Theascentphasewasnominalinallrespects.TheSRB's(SolidRocketBoosters)performednormallywithmotorperformanceclosetopredictedvaluesandwellwithinallowableenvelopes.SRBseparationoccurredatthenominaltimeandbothSRB'swerefloatingnormallyatrecovery.AllET(ExternalTank),SSME(SpaceShuttleMainEngine),sionSystem)parameterswerenormal.NoETlaunchcommitwerenoted,andnosignificanticebuildupwasobserved.atstart,mainstage,andshutdownwasverysatisfactory.alsoverysatisfactory.MECO(MainEngineCutoff)occurredverynearthepredictedtimeandtheresult-ingorbitalparameterswereaspredicted.Sincethiswasadirectinsertiontrajectory,theOMS(OrbitalManeuveringSystem)1maneuverwasnotperformed.Theorbitalparametersfollowingthesatisfactory178-secondOMS-2maneuverwereaspredicted(190by191nmi.).andMPS(MainPropul-criteriaviolationsMainengineoperationMPSperformancewasFlightdaylon-orbitactivitiesconsistedmainlyofunstowingequipmentre-quiredfororbitaloperationsanddeployingtheMORELOSsatellite.Thesatel-litewasdeployedat168:19:37:51G.m.t.,within1secondoftheplannedtime.Followingdeployment,theOrbiterperformeda13.46-secondseparationmaneuver

usingtheleftOMSengine.TheRMS(RemoteManipulatorSystem)wasdeployedandthewristcamerawasusedtoobservethePKM(PerigeeKickMotor)firingofthesatellite.Flightday2wasmainlycharacterizedbytheactivitiessurroundingthedeploy-mentoftheARABSAT-Asatellite.Initially,dataindicatedthatthesolarar-raysweredeployedonthesatellitewhileitstillwascoveredbythesunshield.Afteropeningthesunshield,asurveywasmadewiththeRMSendeffectorTVcameraofthesatelliteandallsystemsappearedtobereadyfordeployment.Thesatellitewasdeployedontimeat169:13:56:56G.m.t.onJune18,1985.ThePKMburnwasagainobservedbyvideocameraandallactivitiesassociatedwiththesatelliteappearednormal.Otheractivitiesoftheseconddayincludedper-formingthetwoFrenchexperimentsandEarthobservations.Muchofflightday3wasdevotedtopreparationforthedeploymentoftheTELSTAR-3Dsatellite.Thesatellitewasdeployedwithin1secondoftheplannedtimeat170:11:20:36G.m.t.Theusualseparationmaneuveraftersatellitede-ploymentwasperformed,andtheRMSwaspositionedsothattheTELSTARPKMburncouldbeobservedonTV.TheHPTE(HighPrecisionTrackingexperiment)wasunsuccessfullyattempteddur-ingthethirdday.TwoerrorsintheCrewActivityPlandatacausedtheOrbitertobeorientedtotheincorrectattitudeforsuccessfulacquisition.Addition-ally,thetwoFrenchexperimentsandtheADSFexperimentwerealloperatedsuccessfully.Also,theadvancedautopilotperformanceDTO(detailedtestob-jective)(0909)wasperformedsuccessfully.
On
flightday4,theSPARTAN101spacecraftwasdeployedandreleasedat171:16:02:39G.m.t.,followedbytwoRCSseparationmaneuvers.TheFrenchEcho-cardiographexperimentwasalsosuccessfullyperformed.
On
flightday5,allactivitieswiththeADSFexperimentwerecompletedandtheexperimentwasdeactivated.Also,theFrenchechocardiographexperimentwascontinuedandthehighprecisiontrackingexperimentweresuccessfullyconduct-ed.TelevisionpicturesofthelaserbeamfromtheHPTEasviewedbyonboardTVcamerasweretransmittedto~issionControl.InadditiontotheEarthobservations,thefirstoftherequiredSPARTANrendezvousmaneuverswasperformed.Themajoractivityofflightday6wastherendezvouswiththeSPARTANspace-craftfromaseparationdistanceofabout100miles.Allrendezvousoperationswerenominalaswasthegrapplingat173:13:31:54G.m.t.andtheherthingoftheSPARTANspacecraftinthepayloadbay.TheSPARTANspacecraftwasoff90de-greesinrollfromtheorientationthatwasplannedforatcapture,butthiscausednoproblemsinthecaptureoperations.OtheractivitiesofthissixthdayweretheconductoftheFrenchexperimentsandtheperformanceoftheFCS(flightcontrolsyst\m)checkoutusingAPU(AuxiliaryPowerUnit)3.TheactivitiesoftheseventhdayincludedanothersuccessfulperformanceofDTO0909andthecrewpressconference.Cabinstowageactivitieswereconductedinpreparationforlandingontheeighthday.
