Guard Your Tongue
-Niños, tengo que ir a buscar los nuevos
cuadernos de trabajo a la secretaría -explicó la
maestra-. Sigan haciendo los ejercicios de
ortografía hasta que vuelva. Susana, ¿te quieres
encargar de vigilar? Tu trabajo será escribir el
nombre de todo el que hable mientras yo estoy
fuera.
Al poco rato, Susana oyó que hacia el
final del aula había alguien hablando y
riéndose. Miró, y escribió: Ana.
Al volver la profesora, miró la hoja que
había escrito Susana y le dio a Ana unas
tareas de limpieza para la hora del recreo.
Ana estaba enojada con Susana porque había
apuntado su nombre, y empezó a inventarse
cosas sobre ella. A los pocos días, varias
amigas suyas hablaban entre sí de que Susana
había robado en la tienda de la esquina.
“Class, I need to go and pick up the new
workbooks from the office,” said the teacher.
“Please continue with your spelling lists until
I return. Sue, will you be the monitor? It will
be your job to write down the name of anyone
who talks while I am gone.”
Soon Sue heard talking and
giggling at the back of the room.
She looked up, and then wrote
down Ann’s name. When the
teacher returned, she looked at
Sue’s paper, and gave Ann some
cleaning chores to do at recess.
Ann was angry with Sue for
reporting on her and began making
up stories about Sue. Soon her
friends were whispering that Sue
had stolen some things from the
corner store.
Ana sabía que Susana no había robado nada,
pero estaba envidiosa, porque su mamá
siempre estaba diciendo lo buena que era
Susana. Pensaba vengarse de ella así.
Al cabo de un tiempo, las niñas de la clase de
Ana empezaron a tratarla mal, por lo que
había dicho Susana de ella. La miraban mal y
decían cosas muy feas de ella.
Susana se puso muy triste y ya ni
siquiera quería ir al colegio.
Cuando Ana vio cuánto daño le había
hecho a la pobre Susana al decir cosas
malas sobre ella, se arrepintió. Trató
de explicar a las demás niñas que
en realidad Susana no había robado
nada, pero algunas niñas siguieron
hablando mal de Susana de todas
maneras.
Ann knew that sue didn’t steal. But Ann was
jealous. Ann’s mother was always telling her
Sue was such a good girl. This was Ann’s way
of getting back at Sue.
Because of what Ann said, the girls in the class
soon weren’t friends with Sue anymore. They
gave her mean looks and said mean things
about her. This made Sue feel
very sad. She didn’t even want
to go to school any more.
When Ann saw what her
unkind words had done to Sue,
she began to feel badly about
it. She tried to tell the other
girls that Sue didn’t really
steal. But some of the girls
kept on saying bad things
about Sue anyway.
Al final, los padres de Susana decidieron
mudarse e irse a vivir a otra parte, para que
Susana pudiera ir a otro colegio. Susana ya no
era feliz, porque tenía el corazón enfermo de
la pena. Y todo porque Ana, movida por su
envidia, dijo unas mentiras malintencionadas.
Cuando estás tentado decir algo desagradable
acerca de otra persona, piensa en las
palabras de este poema:
"Si supiera yo que una palabra mía,
una palabra poco amable y veraz,
podría dejar su huella
en el rostro de aquella
persona querida, no la hablaría,
¿tú sí?
Si supiera que el veneno de una palabra
quedaría en el aire y marcaría
con una profunda y negra herida
el corazón de una persona querida,
no creo que diría esa palabra,
¿tú sí?"
At last Sue’s mother and father decided they
must move so that Sue could go to a different
school. Sue wasn’t happy anymore because
her heart was sick. And all because Ann was
jealous and had told some mean lies.
When you are tempted to say something
unkind about someone else, think about the
words of this poem:
“If I knew that a word of mine,
A word not kind and true,
Might leave its trace
On a loved one’s face,
I don’t think I’d speak it,
Would you?
If I knew the sting of a word
Might linger and leave its mark,
With a deep dark scar
On a loved one’s heart,
I don’t think I’d speak that word,
Would you?”
