]: April 11, 2011On behalf of the 400 members of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York, and themore than 4,500 men and women working in the state’s oil and gas industry every day, I writeto ask you to continue to apply reason, common sense and fact-based analysis as you considerthe future of natural gas development in New York.We believe that President Obama was absolutely correct when he spoke to the nation aboutour energy future on March 30:
“Recent innovations have given us the opportunity to tap large reserves – perhaps acentury’s worth of reserves, a hundred years worth of reserves – in the shale under our feet. But just as is true in terms of us extracting oil from the ground, we’ve got to makesure that we’re extracting natural gas safely, without polluting our water supply.”
We agree. New York can be more energy independent, and we can do so safely and with everyeffort to protect the environment. This has been our industry’s history of work in New York formore than a century. But opponents to natural gas drilling have taken part in a cynical campaign to block all futurenatural gas development in New York. We have found that much of the information sharedwith the public to be often misleading and sometimes even patently false.Protecting the environment is a top priority of New York’s oil and gas industry. My colleaguesand I are committed to sharing scientifically based information regarding natural gasdevelopment in New York with you and your staff. For nearly three years we have promotedthat the pending NYS DEC Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement should bethorough, and that it should adequately protect the state’s natural resources.New York cannot afford to allow protests rooted in misinformation to halt the tremendouseconomic opportunity that awaits our state. It is why we share the attached fact sheets for yourconsideration. With every day that passes, economic opportunity is lost to neighboring states. These states, including West Virginia and Pennsylvania, are now experiencing record levels of economicresurgence, including dramatic increases in employment, sales and income tax collection, andbusiness growth.Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel known to man. It is a solution to reducing our nation’scarbon footprint, and it will greatly improve New York’s and America’s energy independence.
