ith May being just aroundthe corner and UND stu-dents preparing to studyhard and party evenharder, it is only fit that After 5 talks aboutthis year’s SpringFest. Recently I caught upwith Matt Winjum, co-owner of RhombusGuys Pizza who is putting on this year’sSpringFest and Jon Wayne from this year’sheadlining band Jon Wayne and the Pain.
A5:
When is Rhombus SpringFest?
MW:
SpringFest is May 7th in Univer-sity Park from 12-6.
A5:
Why does Rhombus Guys sponsorSpringFest?
MW:
Because it is a cool event thatneeded a direction. It fits well with our busi-ness model and our goals.
A5:
In what capacities does RhombusGuys sponsor SpringFest?
MW:
In every capacity. It is our event. We make all of the decisions and we are re-sponsible for all of the execution. Bands,Beer, Food, Fencing, Security, Sound, Staff,Insurance, etc.
A5:
Other than making tons of money, what other reasons are there for putting onSpringFest for you?
MW:
The success of the event is largelydependent on the weather, and the weatheris the reason we put on the event. By May,everyone is sick of the long, cold winter andRhombus SpringFest is a way to shed thatand embrace the coming summer. Studentsare finishing up the school year, and all of the stars have aligned for a righteous party.
A5:
How many years have you beenhelping out with SpringFest?
MW:
We have been helping out withSpringFest for five years, but this will be thethird year that it is solely our event.
A5:
What bands will be playing atSpringFest and what is the lineup schedule?
MW:
We have India Ink and John Wayneand The Pain. Playing in that order. We willadd one more band at the front, our openers.Haven't decided on them yet.
A5:
Anything else you'd like to add?
MW:
This event is open to everyone inthe area, not just UND Students. We lookforward to seeing everyone come out andsupport the event and have another safe andfun year!!!! A few rules to remember:• No outside food or beverage allowed inthe park• No backpacks or purses allowed in thepark• You must have a valid ID• You cannot consume alcoholic bever-ages outside of the event fencing - Do NotBring Alcohol To The Park Or U Will BTicketed• No Pets• No Glass• No Being Dumb• Have FunThis year’s band line-up will be nothingshort of a great party. Jon Wayne a reggaeband out of Minneapolis that has roots inNorth Dakota will be the final act and willsurely please those looking to move on thedance floor, or in this case, grass.Jon Wayne’s musical journey has drivenhim from the frigid cold of North Dakota tothe lush warmth of his Jamaican influences, with a few detours thrown in along the way.As the lead vocalist and guitarist of JonWayne and The Pain, Jon, with bassistChuck Torgerson, drummer Scott Zaker andpercussionist Tito Miller, has created aunique sound that combines reggae/skarhythms, meaningful lyrics with a set of ir-resistible beats. The band released their first album in thespring of 2008. Produced by Mark Murphyof Wookiefoot, the self-titled debut was re-leased to strong reviews and a growing fanbase for Jon Wayne and the Pain that has ex-tended beyond the Midwest. Drummer Sas-san “Scotty” Zaker and percussionist TitoMiller joined the band in the spring of 2010.Their sophomore release “FollowThrough” builds upon the success of thegroup’s self-titled 2008 debut album, onceagain showcasing their unique mix of reg-gae, ska, acoustic blues, and dub that fanscan’t get enough of. This signature sound, referred to as ‘Redemption Reggae’ by theband and their loyal supporters, is one thatcontinues to gain traction across the U.S.and beyond. On occasion the band is joinedonstage by members of Sublime and SlightlyStoopid, two scene favorites who have giventhe Minneapolis musicians a great deal of in-spiration and support.Jon Wayne and the Pain have made it tofull time musicians. They are just now com-ing off a tour which brought them to Floridaduring Spring Break. They’ve traveled allover the Western half of the US and a fewSoutheastern states.Lyrically, Jon Wayne and the Pain speakabout their life experiences.“I write a very similar to the way BradNowell from Sublime wrote. His life was astruggle with drugs and stuff, and my lifeturned out to be very similar. I started doingdrugs when I was really young and ended upbeing addicted to hard drugs and living onthe streets of Minneapolis. I was the dudeholding the sign on the highway saying,‘homeless. Need money. Please help.’ So alot of influence comes from living a life thatI knew I didn’t want to be living and then alot of the other influence comes from mov-ing past that life and living a new life thatdoesn’t involve doing drugs anymore ordrinking,” said Wayne. “Hopefully spread-ing the message that if someone is living alife they don’t want to be living, they canlive a different life and that’s possible andavailable.”Wayne surely has the life to inspire agreat message in his lyrics, but it’s theirmusic that really makes their shows worthgoing to. Reggae, Ska, Dub, all those genresaren’t very popular in main stream music, but for some reason, Jon Wayne and the Painhas little trouble filling a concert.“We played SpringFest last year and itwas awesome. There was a thousand pluspeople there and everyone was really out of control. It was really fun,” said Wayne.“People love reggae and dub music. Even if they don’t know they like it, they do like it.People just hear that style of music and getinto it right away. They seem to connect withit. It’s really easy to dance to.”So if you’d like to check out Jon Wayneand the Pain, head over to University Parkin Grand Forks on May 7, you won’t be dis-appointed.
