IIT-JEE 2011 – Qualitative Analysis

Overall Analysis
The JEE-2011 consisted of two papers. Here are some characteristics of this year’s paper.
Paper 1 was of three parts (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics). Each Part had 23 questions of 80
marks. Each part had 4 sections.
• Section I had 7 questions of 3 mark each (Total Marks: 21). This section had negative
marking of -1 mark if wrong answer is marked
• Section II had 4 questions of 4 marks each (Total Marks: 16). There was no negative marking
in this section.
• Section III had 5 questions of 3 marks each (Total Marks: 15). This section had negative
marking of -1 mark if wrong answer is marked
• Section IV had 7 questions of 4 marks each (Total Marks: 28). There was no negative
marking in this section.
Paper 2 was again of three parts (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics). Each Part had 20 questions of
80 marks. Each part had 4 sections.
• Section I had 8 questions of 3 mark each (Total Marks: 24). This section had negative
marking of -1 mark if wrong answer is marked
• Section II had 4 questions of 4 marks each (Total Marks: 16). There was no negative marking
in this section.
• Section III had 6 questions of 4 marks each (Total Marks: 24). There was no negative marking
in this section.
• Section IV had 2 questions of 8 marks each (Total Marks: 16). There was no negative
marking in this section. However, a provision was made of awarding 2 marks for each row
answered correctly in question, thus maximum 8 marks per question.
The distribution of topics was fair and proper weightage was given to each topic as per IIT-JEE traditions.
Less negative marking than last year will push the cutoffs to the higher side however no provision for
partial marking will work to push the cutoff lower. All in all, this year’s exam was easier as compared to
previous year’s exam and cutoffs are expected to go up this year.

Physics

This time XI part was more (90 /180) as compared to XII (70 /180) part. Overall the paper was easy and
scoring. Electrodynamics, was the most asked about topic in physics this year. 46 mark questions were
asked in total, out of which, 21 Marks in Paper-I and 25 marks in Paper-II. EMF (14), electrostatics (14)
and Alternating current (8) were most asked part from electrodynamics.
Mechanics, always a popular topic with IIT-JEE, was this year also no exception, with 41 marks worth
questions asked from this topic. There was a simple comprehension type question including fluid and
projectile motion. There was a very simple question from friction and elasticity.
There were no questions from centre of mass, Newton’s laws of motion, projectile and rectilinear
motion.
While Heat and Thermodynamics had 19 mark scoring questions.
Modern Physics had 5 questions worth 17 Marks containing simple questions on Bohr model and
radioactivity.
Wave optics was neglected this year but geometrical optics brings you two scoring questions worth 7
marks.
Overall paper was almost equally distributed among all the topics with appropriate weightage.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Algebra as usual was the most asked topic with whopping 59 marks covering various
sub-topics like Complex numbers, Sequence & Series, Quadratic Equation, Matrices and Determinants.
While some topics like Binomial Theorem, Permutation and Combination, Mathematical Induction were
skipped for this year.
2D Coordinate Geometry was second most asked topic in JEE-2011 with questions worth 28 marks.
Parabola had 3 questions worth 11 marks, while ellipse was left untouched this year.
Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus were worth 26 and 11 marks respectively. Vector had 4
questions of 13 marks and Trigonometry claimed 11 marks with 3 questions. Basics and 3D Coordinate
was asked only once with 3 marks each.
54% questions were from Class XI topics while 46% of the paper consisted of questions from class XII
topics.

This year, estimated problems of easy to moderate level were 80%, while moderate to tough level were
20%. Easy problems were found from the continuity and derivability, straight lines, area under the curve
and definite integration topics. These problems should have been attempted first.
Overall, according to resonance experts, this year’s paper was relatively simple as compared to previous
year’s paper and cutoff is expected to rise in Mathematics section.

Chemistry

In Chemistry portion of both papers, Physical chemistry commanded a lion’s share with 71 marks. With
all topics getting at least one mark, while stoichiometry had most 15 marks with 4 questions.
Organic chemistry, as always was well represented with 53 marks, with questions from all topics, except
Alkane, Alkyl Halides-GR and Practical Organic Chemistry. Biochemistry had most 3 questions of 11
marks, while alkenes & alkynes claimed 3 questions worth 11 marks.
Inorganic chemistry was worth 36 marks with most questions from qualitative analysis (12 marks) and
Coordination Compounds (10 marks). Many topics such as periodic table, chemical bonding, s-block
elements, d-block elements and p-block elements were skipped for this year’s paper.
In paper I, most of the questions were from NCERT syllabus of 11th. Mole concepts, kinetic theory of
gases, Atomic structure, and nuclear chemistry were fairly easy and straight forward and could be solved
with application of basic concepts.
Topic wise, IUPAC Nomenclature, Reaction Mechanism, Aromatic compounds, Carbonyl compounds,
Amino Acids, Bio-molecules had tough questions. Carboxylic Acid, Alkenes, Alkynes has moderate
questions.
Questions from surface chemistry, vapor pressure moderate and tricky but good questions
In paper 1, questions from Coordination compounds, electrochemical series, and qualitative analysis
were rated fairly easy and simple, and rest were rated moderate to tough.

In paper 2, largely NCERT syllabus of 12th was followed. Most of the questions were not straight forward
as in paper 1. Questions required some application and trick to solve them. Overall it was more difficult
than paper 1.
In some sense, this paper followed it tradition of focusing on Nitrogen family questions, coordination
compound questions. A few surprises were questions on bio-molecules, which are not asked so often
Overall, paper 1 was based on NCERT syllabus of 11th Class and was based on basic definition and
application of chemistry, while paper 2 was largely based on 12th class syllabus of NCERT and had some
fairly tricky questions. It can be said that while paper 1 was a scoring paper, paper 2 will decide the rank
of an aspirant.
In totality chemistry paper was for someone who is well grounded in basics and has not indulged himself
much in high flying chemistry.
