NASA'S
MANNED
SPACE FLIGHT -

The material in this booklet is a reprint of a portion
of that which was prepared by AS's Office of
Manned
Space Flight for presentation to the Congress of the
P R E F A C E
nited States during its consideration of the NASA
budget for fiscal year 1970. In view of the general
interest in this material it is being made available
to a wider audience.
The statement reviews the objectives of the mannedspace flight program, some of the benefits that havebeen realized to date and the status of the program,
as of the spring of calendar year 1969. The program
included plans for the first manned landing on themoon and the safe return of the astronauts in theApollo program, to be followed by lunar explorationand earth-orbital flights continuing through calendar
year l972
Also included is a discussion of some of the stepsbeing taken to move Out toward new goals for the 1970s.The steps include a study by the Science and TechnologyAdvisory Committee for Manned Space Flight, and two new
programs beginning at this time. One of these is a
reusable vehicle for transportation to and from earth
orbit, designed to reduce costs substantially. The
other is a large manned orbital space Station. Finally, the statement includes an estimate of the cost of all of
these activities in fiscal year 1970.
