OUR STUDIO
photographer, who is as old asphotography itself, was commenting only the otherday to a Canon rep that it’s a shame the pelliclemirror idea that Canon introduced in the 1960s hasnot been revisited since it died in the EOS-1N RS.The principle behind the semi-transparent pelliclemirror was that light could pass through it and reflectoff it at the same time, so there was no need tomake it flip up for a picture to be recorded. Withoutthe requirement for mechanical movement, thedelay between shutter activations could be reduced, and frame rates increased. It’s nice to see the idea making a bit of a comeback in the new SLT (single lens translucent) modelslaunched by Sony recently. Although the purpose ofthe reflective aspect of the mirror now is only tosupply light to the AF sensors, and the balance ofwhat passes through and what isreflected is different, the principle ofthe fixed position mirror remains thesame, as do the aims – full-time AFand minimal delay betweenpictures being taken. Originalideas may be hard to come by,but there are plenty of ways torecycle old ones. I’m lookingforward to the re-introductionof the solar-powered camera.
