Rewriting the Story

By the time I was 12, my name was in
newspapers across the world. Today, if
you Google my name, more than 250
articles will appear about me. While
I one day want to make headlines for
great discoveries in disease research
and science, the attention I got as a
young boy was not what I wished. In
fact, the whole situation was some-
thing I never would have wished.
I grew up in
Gwinnett
County and
was going
down the
wrong path.
My dad was
in jail and
not part of
my daily life.

As a child,
I took advantage of my mom by
acting out in school and was ex-
pelled. My parents decided to send
me to a different environment: my
grandparents’ home in Nigeria.
At first, I was excited. Whenever I
was disciplined, I would scream at
my mom, “I can’t wait to go to Afri-
ca!” The day I actually landed there,
however, I was immediately ready to
come home. The poverty and harsh
conditions were a shock to a kid
who grew up in a big American city.
I cannot say my entire time there was
awful – my grandparents were good
to me and I had many great, mean-
ingful experiences. But after three
years, I longed for the conveniences
and the opportunities that I had taken
for granted in the United States. As I
begged for a way to get home, some
men approached me who said they
would pay for a plane ticket and make
sure I got back to my mom in Georgia.
All I had to do was carry an extra suit-
case with me. It was no big deal and
there were a bunch of kids who have
gone through with this, they told me.
Sure, I was skeptical about what they
were going to put in the suitcase, but

ing to get home. It seemed like such
a small thing to do. On the day I was
to leave, I really had nothing to pack.
I took a book and a letter from my
grandparents and met the men that
approached me earlier that week be-
hind our compound. They drove me
to their apartment and showed me
the plane ticket – I was excited and
nervous. Then they revealed their
actual plans for me: I was the suit-
case. I would have to swallow saran-
wrapped and taped packets filled
with drugs before I made my travels.

I immediately wanted to leave. I was
scared – scared of getting in trouble,
scared of swallowing drugs, every-
thing. The men held a knife to my
face and stated, “We have already
bought you a ticket, you have to do
this or you will die right here!” In
addition, the other man said if I did
not “complete my mission,” they
would kill my grandparents. With a
knife at my neck, I felt like I was in
the middle of one horrible conun-
drum and that I really had no choice.
In all, I was forced to swallow 86 pack-
ets filled with heroin. I made it on the
plane and landed in New York. I got
in a taxi, but was too scared to go to
the address where the men said to go.
So I told the driver a made-up address
and that I’d tell him how to get there.
After a couple of hours of searching
for the address, the driver stopped
the cab in the middle of the street and
irritably asked, “No one was at the
past three places we stopped, so what
are you up to?” I began to cry and
told him the situation I had gotten
myself in and asked for his help. He
took me back to LaGuardia airport,
where I wanted to turn myself in.

After a long period of questioning
by the detectives, I was placed in an
ambulance. I learned that one small
tear in any of the packages could have
led to my death. My mom was dazed
when she found out I was in New
York. She wanted me to come home,
but the New York judicial system had
something else in mind. I was in a ju-
venile jail for 11 months and 16 days.
Thankfully, a Georgia lawyer took
on my case pro bono and worked to
find a way to get me back to my mom.
By working with the Georgia and
New York court systems, my lawyer
was able to have the remainder of
my sentence served by living at
Eagle Ranch and being accountable to
Hall County juvenile justice officials.
I had a great attitude about going to
the Ranch; it was even more beautiful
than anything I dreamed about in jail.
I thought it would be a short step-
ping-stone to my final stopping place.

I didn’t believe I had much to learn or
that I had any issues. I hoped I would
be understood. I moved into the Grace
Home and was ready to be a leader.
As I entered high school, I coped
with the culture shock by trying to
be cool by rapping, mostly about
my jail time and elaborate life. A lit-
tle over a month after being at the
Ranch, it was clear that I did have a
lot of things I needed to deal with.
My house dad, Shon, was one of the
few positive male role models I had
ever encountered. I could talk to my
houseparents or my counselor about
anything. They showed me uncondi-
tional love. The other boys in the home
assisted me in bettering myself by
holding me accountable – they called
me out when I lied or manipulated
situations; nevertheless, they under-
stood me better than anyone ever had.
I remember Eddie Staub told me he
knew that one day I would succeed
in whatever I did, and hoped that
I did something great with my life.
That stuck with me to this day.
I spent two years at the Ranch and I am
still benefiting from the lessons I’ve
learned. It was a nurturing, accepting
environment that didn’t let me off the
hook, but worked to make me better.
My faith became stronger, and when
my faith is challenged even today, my
memories and learnings from the
Ranch help to restore it. That time
helped me become a well-rounded
man and a
model citizen.
Today, I am
majoring in
biology at
Morehous e
College.
When I grad-
uate, I would
like to spend Prince at Morehouse College
time doing research on Multiple
Sclerosis, a disease that has
affected both my grandmother and
mother and some other relatives
on my maternal side. My mother
is now wheelchair-bound because
of it. I’d like to contribute to find-
ing a way that will change that des-
tiny for others in my family who
may be affected by it in the future.

Life’s still not easy, but I know that
obstacles don’t keep me from suc-
cess if I keep striving. I hope one
day that my name and my story will
be associated not with only adver-
sity, but as a symbol of hope and
perseverance for other young chil-
dren, who may think they are in a
dilemma where they do not believe
there is a possibility for success.

Harry and Laura Leigh Hicks have a heart for children.
With three children of their own, nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren, they have seen future generations blossom
within their own family. “The children in our family had so many
privileges and blessings that some children never get to experience.
It made us want to reach out to children in need,” said Mrs. Hicks.

The Hicks have long supported children’s homes
in Florida and Mississippi. Originally from
College Park, Georgia, they first heard of Eagle
Ranch when a friend and Eagle Ranch supporter,
Bootsie Smith, sent Mrs. Hicks a copy of ‘On
Eagle’s Wings’ for Christmas. “I was so carried
away with it. My husband then read it, and we
decided we wanted to get involved.”
The Hicks have maintained a strong connection
to Georgia through family and Mr. Hicks’ friends
from his years at Georgia Tech. On a trip from
Atlanta back to their current home in Henderson-
ville, North Carolina, the couple stopped by the
Ranch, took a tour and asked how they could help.

charitable gift annuities and just felt it was the
best place to invest,” Mrs. Hicks said.
A charitable gift annuity
is part charitable gift
and part fixed annuity.
In return for a contribution of cash, marketable
securities or other assets, a charity agrees to
provide fixed annuity payments to one or two
individuals for their lifetimes. A portion of the
contribution is income tax-deductible, while a
portion of the fixed annuity payment is tax-free.
Both 85, the Hicks felt a charitable gift annuity
was a great option because they can support the
children of Eagle Ranch while guaranteeing a
steady flow of income to support them.
“What’s appealing to me is the guaranteed income
– we get a check every quarter. We appreciate the
Ranch’s Christian principles and the opportunities
they provide for children with difficult home
lives,” she noted.
Charitable gift annuities are easy to set up. Unlike
trusts, they do not require an attorney to establish.
They provide regular payments that are often
higher than current CD rates. The volatility of the
stock market and low CD rates make charitable
gift annuities an attractive investment option for
seniors today.

Player Visits Children
Eagle Ranch children recently were treated to a dinner
featuring Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Brian Finneran.
The 2009 Ed Block Foundation Courage House Award
recipient, Finneran is the Falcons' Courage House player.
Each NFL team has a Courage House player, who is chosen for his
personal demonstration of courage. Finneran was selected for his perseverance and
performance despite repeated knee injuries during his career. Accompanied by his
wife and four children, Finneran spoke to the boys and girls, signed autographs and
received recognition for his support of the Ranch.
