The official language of China is the dialect spokenin its capital city Beijing. It is usually referred toin the west as ‘Mandarin’, but the Chinese call itPutonghua – common speech. In 1958 the Chineseadopted a system of writing their language usingthe Roman alphabet known as
 pīnyī
n (which we’veused here). The original idea was to eventually doaway with characters. However, tradition dies hard, and the idea has been abandoned. Most travellerswill use
 pīnyīn
to get by, but in China especially, aphrasebook is essential.
