Forms of Business Owne
rship
• One of the first decisions that you will have to make as a business
owner is how the company should be structured. This decision will
have long-term implications, so consult with an accountant and
attorney to help you select the form of ownership that is right for you.
In making a choice, you will want to take into account the following:
• Your vision regarding the size and nature of your business.
• The level of control you wish to have.
• The level of "structure" you are willing to deal with.
• The business's vulnerability to lawsuits.
• Tax implications of the different ownership structures.
• Expected profit (or loss) of the business.
• Whether or not you need to re-invest earnings into the business.
• Your need for access to cash out of the business for yourself.
• The vast majority of small businesses start out as sole
proprietorships. These firms are owned by one person, usually the
individual who has day-to-day responsibility for running the business.
Sole proprietors own all the assets of the business and the profits
generated by it. They also assume complete responsibility for any of
its liabilities or debts. In the eyes of the law and the public, you are
one in the same with the business.
Internet Marketing
• Technology has changed so rapidly over the past 15
years that the things you can do may present
overwhelming choices to the small business owner.
The Technology Tower is devoted to making some
of those choices a little easier and less
threatening. Wondering if your business needs an

Business Plans
• A business plan precisely defines your business, identifies
your goals, and serves as your firm's resume. The basic
components include a current and pro forma balance
sheet, an income statement, and a cash flow analysis. It
helps you allocate resources properly, handle unforeseen
complications, and make good business decisions.
Because it provides specific and organized information
about your company and how you will repay borrowed
money, a good business plan is a crucial part of any loan
application. Additionally, it informs sales personnel,
suppliers, and others about your operations and goals.

What do I do with the
computer that I just
purchased?
• The answer is simple. First ask yourself the primary reason you purchased
a computer. An answer could be anything from "playing games" to "word
processing." With your answer in mind, look to some of the suggestions
below.
• To help answer the question, refer to the Windows® 95, 98 or Windows
NT® Help files. To do so, click the Start button and then click Help. When
the Help screen appears, click the Index tab. This search feature allows
you to dynamically view the operating system help files that will answer
most of your questions. Click inside the small window directly under the
Index or Search tab. Type in a keyword and click Search.
• Read the documentation that you received with your computer. There is
online documentation that you can reference as well. The User's Guide is
on of the best sources of information about your new computer.
• Call a friend or neighbor who has experience on computers to help you
through an introduction of what to do with your system.
• Use the tutorials supplied with the operating system and other installed
software, purchase basic books for your particular areas of interest, or
take some classes on different computer topics.
• Within this lesson you will Learn about your new computer
Basic Computer Skills
• There are many good places to buy computer parts. You can go
to a computer retail store in your area. Although they often
provide good warranties, the trade off may be that you will pay
a little more than you would in other places. Sometimes, a lot
more. Also, due to the sheer volume of people they see every
day, some of the "support specialists" don't always listen to your
concerns and start jumping to conclusions on what you need or
what the problem is. Some of them take pride that they can give
you a technical answer in two seconds and make themselves
look smart, even though what they just said is probably wrong.
If you walk in and say your computer keeps crashing and he
insists you need a new motherboard and CPU to fix it, start
running. Don’t miss this class; we will teach you the basics of
building and troubleshooting a computer.

• In the following pages, you will find the steps to building

and upgrading your own PC. Enjoy!
