Goodlow Page Section are gathering for their ninthannual Spring Hat Extravaganza and Tea, A Salute to Women ofDistinction, and this event presents an ideal opportunity torecognize this noteworthy organization; andWHEREAS, The NCNW was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune,an educator and civil rights leader who advocated higher educationfor African American girls, started what became Bethune-CookmanUniversity, and served as an advisor to President Franklin D.Roosevelt; the council unites women dedicated to improving qualityof life for themselves, their families, and their communities andhas an outreach to four million women through its 250community-based sections and 38 national affiliated organizations,including the National Assembly of Voluntary Health and SocialWelfare Organizations, the National Council of Women in the UnitedStates, and the International Council of Women; andWHEREAS, NCNW sponsors educational, economic, social,cultural, and scientific self-help projects at the national andlocal levels; funded by membership, private donations, and grantsfrom foundations, corporations, and governments, the group
