INSTALLING OUTLOOK 2000

Disable Virus Protection Before Running Setup

---------------------------------------------------------
Some virus protection programs, such as VSafe.com and
Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect, can interfere with the
Microsoft Outlook 2000 Setup program. If you use a virus
protection program on your computer, disable it before
running Setup. (Don't forget to re-enable the virus
protection program after Setup is complete.)

Using Punctuation Characters in Folder Names During Setup

May Cause Problems
---------------------------------------------------------
Do not use a comma (,), single quotation mark ('), or
exclamation point (!) in the name of the folder where you
install Microsoft Outlook 2000. It is recommended that
you use the default folder or use only letters and
numbers in folder names.

Minimum System Requirements for Microsoft Outlook 2000

---------------------------------------------------------
To use Microsoft Outlook 2000, you need:
* PC with a Pentium 75 MHz or higher processor
* Microsoft Windows 95 or later operating system, or
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation operating system
version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
* For Windows 95 or Windows 98:
- 16 MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an
additional 8 MB of RAM for Microsoft Outlook
* For Microsoft Windows NT Workstation operating system
version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later:
- 32 MB of RAM for the operating system, plus an
additional 8 MB of RAM for Microsoft Outlook
* For Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system
version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later:
- 64MB for the operating system, plus an additional 8 MB
of RAM for Microsoft Outlook
* Available hard-disk space (Number indicates typical
installation. Your hard-disk usage will vary depending
on configuration. Choices made during Custom installation
may require more or less hard-disk space):
- Typical installation: 153 MB
* CD-ROM drive
* VGA or higher resolution monitor; Super VGA recommended
* Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft Intellimouse, or
compatible pointing device
Additional items or services required to use certain
features:
* 9600 baud modem; 14,400 or higher baud recommended
* Multimedia computer required to access sound and other
multimedia effects
* Microsoft Mail, Microsoft Exchange, Internet SMTP/POP,
IMAP4, or other MAPI-compliant messaging software
required to use e-mail
* Microsoft Exchange Server required for certain advanced
collaboration functionality in Outlook
* Some Internet functionality may require Internet access
and payment of a separate fee to a service provider

Need to Start Outlook to Complete Setup

---------------------------------------------------------
Outlook setup is not complete until you start Outlook
the first time. Do not install add-ins, change mail
support options, send mail from other programs, or
change Mail & Fax settings in the Control Panel before
starting Outlook once.

Prompt for CD Key When Setting Up Outlook 2000 from

Administrative Installation
--------------------------------------------------------
When you set up Outlook 2000 on your computer from an
administrative installation on a server, you might be
prompted for a CD Key. This will occur if the system
administrator who created the administrative installation
did not enter the CD Key.
To solve this problem, ask the system administrator to
create a new administrative installation and enter the
CD Key in the first dialog box. Once this is done, you
will not be prompted for the CD Key when you run Setup
from this new administrative installation.

Unexpected Message During Installation

---------------------------------------------------------
If you get an unexpected message during Outlook setup,
and you get the same message when you try setup again,
you can create a log file that will be useful to
Microsoft Product Support Services in troubleshooting the
problem. Once you create the file, you will need to call
Microsoft Product Support Services.
>>>To create the log file:
1. Click the Start button on the taskbar, and then click
Run.
2. In the Open box, type:
<PATH>\SETUP.EXE /L*V C:\VERBOSELOG.TXT
where <PATH> is the location of Setup.exe. For
example, if you are installing from a CD-ROM drive, the
text you would type might look like:
D:\SETUP.EXE /L*V C:\VERBOSELOG.TXT
3. Click OK.
Setup will start again and a log file called
Verboselog.txt will be created at the root of your C:
drive.

Installing Outlook 2000 Without Removing the Beta 2 Build

of Office 2000
---------------------------------------------------------
When starting Outlook, you might receive the following
message:
Required registry information is missing and this
application cannot run. Please rerun Setup to correct
this problem.
Or, after a few seconds, the program might quit.
You might experience either of the above if you installed
Outlook 2000 without removing the Beta 2 build (2221b) of
Office 2000.
>>>To remove the Beta 2 build of Office 2000:
1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar, point
to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft
Office 2000 Premium Edition. (This is the Beta 2
version of Office 2000.)
4. Click Add/Remove.
5. Click Remove Office.
6. Click Yes to the prompt confirming that you want to
remove.

Outlook 2000 Shortcut on the Programs Menu Varies

According to Your Operating System
---------------------------------------------------------
The Outlook 2000 shortcut on the Programs menu might have
the following problems:
1. It does not self-repair the program.
This problem occurs because your operating system does
not support Windows Installer shortcuts. Only the
following versions of Microsoft Windows support these
shortcuts:
* Windows 98
* Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT version 4 with
Internet Explorer 4.01, Service Pack 1, and Active
Desktop installed.
Note: If you install Internet Explorer 5 on a computer
that has Windows 95 or Windows NT version 4 with Internet
Explorer 4.01, Service Pack 1, and Active Desktop
installed, it will still support Windows Installer
shortcuts.
2. It does not install the program on first use.
This problem occurs because Installed On First Use is not
an option for Outlook in the Selecting Features dialog
box during setup. Installed On First Use is not an option
because your operating system does not support Windows
Installer shortcuts. The operating systems listed under
1. support Windows Installer shortcuts.
3. It does not display a path on the Shortcut tab of the
Properties dialog box for the shortcut.
This indicates that the shortcut is a Windows Installer
shortcut. Windows Installer shortcuts do not directly
reference the path of the shortcut target. Instead, they
contain a token that the Windows Installer resolves to
the path of the shortcut target. The operating systems
listed under 1. support Windows Installer shortcuts.

Support for the Euro

---------------------------------------------------------
Windows 98 includes features that allow you to enter and
display the euro symbol. If you use Microsoft Windows 95
or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 with
Service Pack 3 or earlier, you might need to update your
system to include features that allow users to enter and
display the euro symbol. For these feature updates, go to
the following addresses:
* For Windows 95
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents
/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/w95europatch/
* For Windows NT 4.0
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents
/wuarchive/nteuropatch/default.asp?site=ntw

WORKING WITH MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2000

Creator Program Must Be Installed to Import NetManage

ECCO Pro or Lotus Organizer Files
---------------------------------------------------------
To import into Outlook a Lotus Organizer 2.1 file or a
NetManage ECCO Pro file, you must have the program that
was used to create the file installed on your computer.
For example, to import an ECCO Pro file into Outlook, you
must have ECCO Pro installed on your computer.

NetMeeting Online Collaboration Feature Requires Windows

NT Version 4.0 with Service Pack 4
---------------------------------------------------------
When you use Outlook 2000 on Windows NT version 4.0, the
Online Collaboration feature, which integrates NetMeeting
with the Office 2000 applications, requires that Service
Pack 4 or later be installed.
Windows Terminal Server Returns Message "You have called
your own computer" When Using NetMeeting
---------------------------------------------------------
NetMeeting directory servers keep track of who is logged
into them by the e-mail address and IP address of each
user. The Windows Terminal Server (WTS) has only one IP
address. When two users have active sessions on the same
WTS, and one user tries to establish a meeting with the
other user, it will cause the NetMeeting directory server
to return the message "You have called your own computer".
If the two users have active sessions on different
WTSs, then the organizer will successfully connect to the
attendee.

Saving a Calendar as a Web Page Creates a New Folder

-------------------------------------------------------
When you enter a location for your Calendar to be saved
as a Web page, a new folder is created by default with
the same name as the file name you enter. So for example,
if you save your Calendar as c:\Calendar\Mycalendar.htm
the actual saved path will be:
c:\Calendar\Mycalendar\Mycalendar.htm

Uninstalling Outlook 2000 on the Same Computer Running

the Exchange Server Causes the Exchange Event Service to
Not Restart
-------------------------------------------------------
If you install an Outlook 2000 client on the same
computer as the Exchange Server, and then uninstall that
client, you must run the regsvr32 command on the
Esconf.dll file. This program is located in the Exchange
Server's bin directory, usually c:\exchsvr\bin.

Importing Private Mailing Lists from cc:Mail DB8 Post

Office Results in Incorrect Addresses.
-------------------------------------------------------
This ONLY affects users of Microsoft Outlook Support for
Lotus cc:Mail. When you import private mailing lists
from a cc:Mail DB8 post office into Outlook, members of
the imported mailing lists that aren't also local members
of the post office are imported with an incorrect
address. For details, see Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 219026.

cc:Mail Post Office Requires VIM Files in the Path

Statement
-------------------------------------------------------
If you want to use Outlook to gain access to your cc:Mail
post office, you must first put the Lotus Corporation
Vendor Independent Messaging (VIM) files and the cc:Mail
export utility into your path statement. These files must
be installed before you create or use a profile with
Outlook support for Lotus cc:Mail.
You can currently download the VIM .dll files from
http://www2.support.lotus.com/ftp/pub/comm/ccmail
/dev_tools/vdlw32.zip. The export utility is shipped with
Lotus cc:Mail server. For D8B post offices, the export
utility contains the files Export.exe and Ie.ri. For DB6
post offices, the export utility contains Export.exe. The
files are typically found in the directory ccadmin, which
contains the administration utilities for the post
office.

Voting Buttons Do Not Appear in Outlook 98 Clients

---------------------------------------------------------
When you send a large message with voting buttons to
recipients using Outlook 98, the voting buttons will not
appear. This can be corrected by reducing the size of the
message to less than 50K. You can reduce message size by
using plain text as your message format and removing any
attachments.

Unable to Import High-Encryption Certificates

---------------------------------------------------------
When you import high-encryption 128-bit PFX files,
you might get the message: "An error has occurred. Unable
to import certificate." In order to import high-encryption
certificates, you must upgrade as follows:
* If you have Windows 95 or 98, install Internet Explorer
5 or later
* If you have Windows NT version 4.0 with Service pack 3,
install Service Pack 4

Entries in Distribution Lists from the Microsoft Exchange

Personal Address Book Are Not Imported to Outlook Contact
Distribution Lists
---------------------------------------------------------
When you create an Outlook contact distribution list in a
contact folder that is on the Exchange server, you are
limited to approximately 130 contacts in the distribution
list.
>>>To work around this limit:
1. Don't import your PAB if prompted to the first time
you run Outlook 2000.
2. Open the PAB and convert the large distribution list
into two or more smaller distribution lists.
3. Import the PAB using the Import and Export command on
the File menu.

Colors May Not Display Correctly on 256-Color Monitors

---------------------------------------------------------
After you view pop-up windows in Help topics, colors for
some elements may no longer display correctly on
256-color monitors. For example, the following elements
may appear differently on the screen after you view
pop-up windows:
* Bitmaps
* Pictures embedded in files
* Office Assistant
* Hyperlinks
To fix the display problem, change the color palette for
your monitor.
>>>To change the color palette:
1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Display icon.
3. On the Settings tab, select an option other than 256
colors. Microsoft recommends that you choose more than
256 colors, if such an option is available.

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2000 HELP ISSUES

Outlook Automatically Upgrades Microsoft At Work fax

program
-------------------------------------------------------
The Help topic "Use the Microsoft At Work fax program
with Outlook" incorrectly states that you need to install
the Microsoft At Work fax program from the Microsoft
Office Web site. Outlook 2000 will automatically upgrade
the versions of the Microsoft At Work fax program that
come with Windows 95 or Windows 98.

Obtaining Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools

-------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools is an add-in package
for Office 2000 that contains all the language tools
Microsoft makes for more than 30 languages. It can be
obtained from a licensed reseller. The part and SKU
numbers listed in Help are incorrect. See
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ for more information on
obtaining Office 2000 Proofing Tools.

QuickFind Box
-------------------------------------------------------
Help topics that refer to the QuickFind box should refer
to the Find A Contact box instead.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS CE ISSUES

Changing E-mail Configurations When Windows CE Is Docked

Results in Problems
---------------------------------------------------------
If Windows CE Services is running when you attempt to
change e-mail service configurations, for example from
Corporate or Workgroup to Internet Only, the configuration
change will fail.
Windows CE Services must be inactive (undock the CE
device) before you change e-mail configurations in Outlook.

Direct Booking of Resources Not Supported in Outlook

Meeting Requests
-------------------------------------------------------
Outlook 2000 allows you to book resources directly in
meeting requests. When these meeting requests are
synchronized with a Windows CE device using Windows CE
Services versions 2.2 or earlier, the resource may be
removed from the meeting location field and may be
changed from a resource to a required attendee.
Microsoft intends to fix this issue in an upcoming
release of Windows CE Services. The update should be
available shortly after Office 2000 is released, and
will be available on the Windows CE Web site at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/default.asp

Distribution Lists Not Supported in Outlook Meeting

Requests
---------------------------------------------------------
Outlook 2000 introduces a new feature that enables you to
create distribution lists in contacts folders. These
distribution lists can then be invited to a meeting in
Outlook meeting requests. Windows CE Services versions
2.2 and earlier do not support distribution lists in
Outlook 2000. When meeting requests containing attendees
that are Outlook distribution lists are synchronized with
a Windows CE device using CE Services version 2.2 or
earlier, the distribution list may be removed from the
meeting request. Microsoft intends to fix this issue in
an upcoming release of Windows CE Services. The update
should be available shortly after Office 2000 is
released, and will be available on the Windows CE Web
site at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/default.asp
_________________________________________________________
MULTILINGUAL ISSUES

Inconsistent Date Format Between Various International

Versions
---------------------------------------------------------
Because date formats differ between countries, Outlook
Calendar cannot accurately distinguish the correct date
format for importing and exporting Outlook Calendar forms
between countries. For example, forms from countries that
use the date format YYMMDD may not import correctly to
versions of Outlook Calendar that use a different date
format (for example, MMDDYY).
_________________________________________________________
ISSUES FOR RIGHT-TO-LEFT LANGUAGE FEATURES
Printing Right-to-Left Languages
---------------------------------------------------------
Certain printers will require updated printer drivers.
Please contact your printer manufacturer if you encounter
problems printing.

Copying Names When the Text Language Does Not Match the
Keyboard Language
---------------------------------------------------------
If you copy a name from the address book, or copy a
resolved name from the To line or Cc line, the name will
not show properly when pasted. Make sure the language of
the text matches the keyboard language.

Signatures Display Improperly in Some Fonts

---------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft recommends that you use Times New Roman, Arial,
or Tahoma for signatures. Your signature might not display
properly in other fonts.
_________________________________________________________
ISSUES FOR ASIAN LANGUAGE FEATURES

Possible Display Problems When Using Multiple Asian Fonts

---------------------------------------------------------
If you install multiple Asian fonts on non-Asian versions
of the Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 operating system,
you might experience display problems, such as very large
text, blank text, or very large blank areas occurring in
Outlook or in Windows NT. This is a known problem in
Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 4 that will be fixed
in an upcoming Service Pack release for Windows NT
version 4.0.
_________________________________________________________

completes an action, the following entries should be
included:
AttachmentAdd An attachment is added to an
item.
AttachmentRead An attachment in an item is
opened for reading.
BeforeAttachmentSave Before an attachment in an
item is saved.
BeforeAttachmentSave, Write An item with a new attachment
is saved.
BeforeCheckNames Before Microsoft Outlook
starts resolving names in the
recipient collection for an
item.

Close Event
---------------------------------------------------------
The Inspector and Explorer objects support the Close
event.

Reminder Event
---------------------------------------------------------
In addition to AppointmentItems, MailItems, and TaskItems,
ContactItems may be associated with a reminder.

Startup and Quit Events

---------------------------------------------------------
The list of new Events in the Outlook object model does
not include the Startup and Quit events.

Add Method (CommandBars Collection)

---------------------------------------------------------
The Temporary argument is ignored in Microsoft Outlook.
You must manually remove any temporary items added to the
CommandBars collection before shutting down the program.

CreateItem Method
---------------------------------------------------------
In the description of the ItemType argument, the list of
OlItemType constants should include
olDistributionListItem (7).

Context Property (CommandBar Object)

---------------------------------------------------------
This property returns an empty string and is otherwise
unsupported.

Selection Property
---------------------------------------------------------
The Selection property returns a Selection collection,
not an Items collection as stated in the documentation.

Default Language for Visual Basic Editor and Microsoft

Script Editor
---------------------------------------------------------
The Visual Basic Editor and Microsoft Script Editor
default to English if the current system code page does
not support the user interface language.

New Properties (VBA)

---------------------------------------------------------
The following are new properties that apply to class
modules in standalone projects:
* Instancing Property
Sets a value that specifies whether you can create
instances of a public class outside a project, and if
so, how they will behave. Not available at run time.
Settings
The Instancing property has these settings:
Setting Description
------- -----------
1 Private (default). Other applications are
not allowed access to type library
information about the class and cannot
create instances of it. Private objects
are only for use within your component.
The Instancing property default varies
depending on the project type. Private is
the default only for class modules in
standalone projects.
2 PublicNotCreatable. Other applications
can use objects of this class only if
your component creates the objects first.
Other applications cannot use the
CreateObject function or the New operator
to create objects from the class.

* Name Property
Returns the name used in code to identify a class.
Read-only at run time.
Syntax
object.Name
The object placeholder represents an object expression
that evaluates to a class.
Remarks
An object's Name property must start with a letter and
can be a maximum of 40 characters long. It can include
numbers and underline (_) characters but can't include
punctuation or spaces. Although the Name property
setting can be a keyword, property name, or the name of
another object, this can create conflicts in your code.

Use F3 to Find Next Text Occurrence in the Code Window

---------------------------------------------------------
Press F3 to find the next occurrence of previously
specified search text in the code window, not SHIFT+F4 as
stated in the documentation.

SCRIPTING, HTML, AND OTHER PROGRAMMING ISSUES

System Event Notification System

---------------------------------------------------------
For programmers writing to the System Event Notification
System (SENS) and the IEventSubscription and IEventSystem
interfaces, please see the documentation for these
interfaces at MSDN Online (http://msdn.microsoft.com/) or
a version of the Platform SDK later than that which
shipped with the April MSDN.

HTML Reference Documentation

---------------------------------------------------------
The latest HTML, DHTML, and CSS documentation is
available online from MSDN Online at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/

Internet Explorer Versions and Editing HTML

---------------------------------------------------------
Selection works differently in Microsoft Script Editor
for sited elements depending on what version of Internet
Explorer you have installed. A sited element is any
element that has a height or width, such as BUTTON.
With Internet Explorer 4.01, selection for sited elements
works as follows:
* The first click on an element allows you to edit the
text within the element.
* The second click on an element selects the element.
* Double-clicking an element selects the text block
within the element.
With Internet Explorer 5.0, selection for sited elements
works as follows:
* The first click on an element selects the element.
* The second click on an element allows you to edit the
text within the element.
* Double-clicking the element brings up the source code
for the element.
Note: Selection for tables in Internet Explorer 5.0 is
the same as it was in Internet Explorer 4.01.
Also, Internet Explorer 5.0 preserves white space better
than Internet Explorer 4.01 when switching between views
in the editor.

"Topic Not Found" Topic (Microsoft Script Editor)

---------------------------------------------------------
You do not need the MSDN Library or MSDN Library CD to
view Help topics for Microsoft Script Editor. If you
encounter the "Topic Not Found" topic, try one of the
following:
* Reinstall Microsoft Script Editor from the Microsoft
Office setup.
* Insert the Microsoft Office CD into the CD-ROM drive.
