Seven Last Words of Jesus
³Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted hisraiment, and cast lots´ (Luke 23:34). Here, Jesus is demonstrating His love and forgiveness byasking God to forgive those who crucified Him.³And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shall thou be with me in paradise´ (Luke23:43). In this passage, Jesus is assuring one of the criminals on the cross that when he died, hewill be with Jesus in heaven.
³When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saithunto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! Andfrom that hour that disciple took her unto his own home´ (John 19:26-27). In this verse, Jesus issimply making sure His earthly mother is cared for after His death.³And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? thatis to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?´ (Matt 27:46). Here, Jesus wasexpressing His feelings of abandonment as God placed the sins of the world on Him ± and because of that had to ³turn away´ from Jesus. As Jesus was feeling that weight of sin, He wasfeeling separated from God for the only time in all of eternity.
³After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might befulfilled, saith, I thirst´ (John 19:28). This is a simple one, Jesus was thirsty.³And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend myspirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost´ (Luke 23:46). Here, Jesus is committing Hisspirit into the Father¶s hands, indicating that He was about to die ± and that God had acceptedHis sacrifice.
