In act, APP can proudly state that no otherpulp and paper company in the world hasimplemented biodiversity initiatives on thEsame scale as APP. These include:
• Working with its pulpwood suppliers to set aside 40 percent of
their orestry concessions or conservation, community use anddevelopment o indigenous species, reecting a set-aside o approximately 1 million hectares o land
• The creation of a 106,000-hectare Senepis Sumatran TigerSanctuary in Riau Province• The creation of a 172,000-hectare Biosphere Reserve in theGiam Siak Kecil• The establishment of the 16,400-hectare Taman Raja NatureReserve in Jambi province• Support for the Kutai Orangutan Program in Kalimantan. In addition, APP has recently partnered with a local NGO on crucialproject to save the endangered Javan rhino. This joint venture will fo

cus on developing a Javan Rhino Sanctuary in Ujung National Park, a76,000-hectare reserve in West Java, Indonesia. The development of the sanctuary is aimed not only to conserve the Javan rhino through
intensive scientifc studies, but also to widen its habitat, protectingit rom domestic animals’ intererence – and ensuring populationgrowth – which are the main goals o the collaboration program.
SENEPIS SUMATRAN TIGERSANCTUARY IN RIAU PROVINCE
APP strongly believes that pulpwood plantationdevelopment can help to protect large landscape
forests. To demonstrate this, one of the compa

Biosphere Reserve in Giam Siak Kecil – Bukit Batu(GSK – BB) Landscape in Riau Province, Sumatra. This is the rst Biosphere Reserve initiative in South
East Asia proposed by the private sector. And it was
the rst UNESCO biosphere project approved in 30years. GSK-BB is the seventh MAB Reserve in Indo
-nesia.
To be considered in the network,a proposed biosphere reserve must ulfllthree unctions:
1.
Conserve the genetic, species, ecosystem, and landscape
diversity
2.
Encourage growth in the local economy
3.
Provide research and educational opportunities, especiallyin conservation and sustainability studies
