• Student are evaluated through the Three Tiers of
Response to Intervention (RTI)

• The structure of the three-tiers of RTI becomes


increasingly individualized
• Student who do not respond adequately maybe
evaluated for Special Education
• This evaluation provides a case-study of the
students behaviors and challenges
A comprehensive evaluation…
• Includes a variety of assessments
• They must be appropriate and free from bias
• In the students native language
• Across disciplines
• Include several teachers and other support specialists

• Data collected and continually reviewed throughout the


evaluation
• Additional evaluation can be provided if deemed
necessary by the team.
Review of Existing Data and Eligibility
Meeting
• Review of Existing Data is completed with the
team.
• If the parent agrees no additional testing is
needed the group can move on to the
Eligibility meeting.
• It is important that the parents fully
understand and are included in the process

Parental Rights
• Parents can request a special education evaluation at
anytime.
• If an immediate evaluation is requested, it must be
fulfilled within 60 days.
• RTI may not be used as a reason to not complete a
special education evaluation.
• The RTI becomes part of the evaluation if it is ongoing.
• Requests for a “traditional” evaluation can be declined
in Illinois
Parental consent
• Throughout RTI parental consent is not
necessary, however it must be sought when
RTI determines a special education evaluation
is necessary.

• Must be obtained anytime a special education


evaluation is conducted!
