Manner of David Teniers the Younger (Flemish, 1610-1690)
N.B. The 1640s and 1650s marked a change in the style and subjects
of David Teniers the Younger, who moved away from his earlier
depictions of peasants in dark interiors in favor of open-air scenes
depicting feasts and festivals, often set in front of an inn or other
buildings. The works became increasingly idyllic and picturesque,
reflecting the growing Arcadian preferences of his patrons.

N.B. We wish to thank Dr. Jens Christian Jensen for his expertise on the basis of
transparencies, a copy of his opinion accompanies the lot. The following is abridged and
translated from his German expertise:
The present work appears to be the final version of Der Briefträger, which has been known
heretofore through a preliminary oil on paperboard study (Wichmann, 515), and an intermediate
oil on canvas study (Wichmann, 516). As the largest and most carefully detailed version of Der
Briefträger known, it follows the three-step work process (i.e. preliminary oil study, intermediate
oil study, final “sales” version) commonly used by Spitzweg, and was likely commissioned for a
specific buyer.
It is painted on A. Schutzmann canvas, which Spitzweg used almost exclusively for his final
“sales” pictures, as it was an excellent quality and expensive support.
The discovery of the present work gives context to the studies of Der Briefträger. Compared to
the intermediate study, this final version shows not only enriched details and a larger format, but
also a concentrated and rich color differentiation, as is characteristic of his major works.
The subject of the painting is an enchanting depiction of the excitement of receiving a letter. The
anticipation and curiosity that Spitzweg creates in the composition transforms what would be a
typical genre scene into a psychological drama.

N.B. Edward Moran was born into an artistic family, and first received drawing instruction at the age of seven.1
As a young adult, he apprenticed under the landscape painter Paul Weber and marine painter James Hamilton of
Philadelphia, both whom influenced his style and encouraged him to open his own studio.2 Edward and his artist
brother Thomas both shared a home and studio from 1855 to 1859, and in 1862, Edward returned to London for
further training at the Royal Academy.3 Edward exhibited his seascapes and maritime views at academies both at
home and abroad, garnering acclaim. In the early 1870s, Edward moved to New York, where he remained for the rest
of his life.

Robert Spear Dunning (American, 1829-1905)
Provenance: Formerly on loan to a New England cultural institution from a private New England collection.
N.B. Robert Spear Dunning, co-founder of the Fall River School of still life painting, was raised in Fall River from the age of five. At
the young age of fifteen, he apprenticed with James Roberts in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and at the age of twenty, enrolled in the
National Academy of Design where he studied with Daniel Huntington. Upon completing his studies, he returned to Fall River in 1852.
Dunning founded the Fall River School with the opening of his studio on Fall River’s Main Street in 1853. By 1865, he narrowed his
genre to still lifes, earning accolades and patrons for his lush, meticulously detailed arrangements. He became a master of reflective
surfaces. His arrangements were most frequently composed of ripened fruit, often with one cut open, flowers, and opulent Victorian
objects set on a highly polished table top. His success, and that of other artists of the area, was further bolstered by the influx of
wealth to Fall River following the Civil War, when the city rose to prominence as the largest producer of cotton cloth in the world.
It was an unusual choice for Dunning to feature root vegetables—onions, potatoes, carrots, and turnip, the makings of a soup or stew,
ready for cooking in the brass pot—set upon a stuccoed brick surface. Dunning elevated the humble status of these vegetables with
his meticulous craftsmanship, yet still portrayed them as the honest ingredients of a meal to be made. With the subtle light, restrained
palette, and minimal background detail, the painting, in terms of both subject matter and style, was much in harmony with the work
of Jean-Baptist Siméon Chardin (French, 1699-1779), whose works were very influential among American still life painters of the 19th
century.
Dunning’s work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, the Boston Art Club, and the Providence
Art Club, and is in the collections of numerous museums including the National Museum of American Art.

Thomas Hill (American, 1829-1908)
N.B. Born in England, Thomas Hill came to the United States in 1844, settling first in Taunton,
Massachusetts. Painting in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Hill remained in the east until 1861,
when, for health reasons, he moved his family to San Francisco. In California Hill developed his
passion for painting the grand expanses of Yosemite, where he would later build a studio in 1883.
During his career, Hill returned periodically to the East to paint. In 1875 he made a summer excursion
to visit Boston and to sketch in the White Mountains. A number of paintings from that trip, which bear
a strong connection to the painting at hand, are illustrated in the catalogue Direct from Nature, The Oil
Sketches of Thomas Hill (Yosemite National Park, California: Yosemite Association in association with
Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, Calif., ©1997), by Janice T. Driesbach with an essay by William H.

Robert Lewis Reid (American, 1862-1929)
N.B. Noted American Impressionist Robert Reid was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He studied at the School of the
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and at the Art Students League in New York, before heading to Paris to the Academie Julian in
the fall of 1885. Returning to the United States in 1889, Reid settled in New York to paint and teach. Shortly thereafter in 1892,
he began the major public mural commissions which would distinguish his career. In 1898 Reid joined with several other artists,
including Childe Hassam and John Twachtman, to found “The Ten,” a loosely-knit group of Impressionists that exhibited together
annually until 1919. Reid continued to paint canvases throughout his career, and he exhibited regularly at the National Academy
of Design, where he became a full Academician in 1906. Reid’s easel paintings tended to feature single figures, often a young
woman holding flowers, set in a landscape or garden, or later dressed in a kimono in an interior setting, but the artist also painted a
full range of subjects including landscapes and nudes. The small landscape at hand is dated 1919, about the time Reid relocated
to Colorado Springs where he helped to found the Broadmoor Art Academy. Its frame is a manufactured version (compo) of a
Stanford White design that was produced by the Newcomb-Macklin Company c. 1920.

Attributed to Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965)
N.B. Peterson visited Cape Ann shortly after World War I, painting street and harbor scenes in
the Gloucester area between 1914 and 1919.1 While Rockport’s most famous fishing shack
is not a documented subject in Peterson’s oeuvre, it would have been a known and accessible
landmark to her. Though unsigned, the present work shows some of the qualities in paint
handling and treatment of light often ascribed to Peterson.

N.B. Schmidt-Rottluff was a founding member of “Die Brücke,” a group which sought to express
“faith in the future, the strength of youth, the value of directness and authenticity, and the rejection
of the older forces of the establishment” through art.1 Though this group was active only from
1905 to 1911, the radical anti-academic model they championed helped to bring Expressionism
into wide acceptance.
By the time Schmidt-Rottluff received public acclaim for his work, the Nazis were growing in power.
In the years leading up to World War II, the Nazis denounced his work as “degenerate,” seizing it
from German museums and banning him from painting in 1941.2 He resumed art-making after
World War II, returning to Germany from self-imposed exile and teaching at the Hochschule der
Bildenden Künste in West Berlin. In 1957, a year before the present work was exhibited at the
Busch-Reisinger Museum, Schmidt-Rottluff was awarded a civil class “Pour le Merite” medal by the
first German Republican president Theodor Heuss. This order, which originated with the Kingdom
of Prussia, recognizes the highest German achievements in the arts.

Glazed ceramic, sizes to 7 x 6 x 5 in. (17.8 x 15.2 x 12.7 cm).
Condition: Restored break to end of cone.
N.B. Gilhooly was at the center of an experimental pottery movement, later known as California Funk, while studying at the University
of California, Davis, under Robert Arneson in 1962.
According to Gilhooly, “FrogFood was an idea that started off as the FrogWorld idea of a snapshot or photograph of an artistic act
done on a vacation. The frogs of the FrogWorld would go on a vacation, make themselves into a food sculpture under the direction
of a professional frogartist, and as a souvenir of the occasion, take home a small sculpture. These small sculptures would then be
displayed on a shelf somewhere in the home much like our-world’s photo albums. The frogs would then look at these small pieces
and remember their vacations. A special type of FrogFood (sort of X-rated) was made by honeymooning couples and was an off-
shoot of this original idea.”1
The present works were created in Gilhooly’s first year of the FrogFood series, and may have originally sold through Hansen-Fuller
Gallery, San Francisco. We wish to thank the artist for his assistance with cataloguing the lot.

Skinner, Inc. - Conditions of Sale
1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and
Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed
the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a
lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.
2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with
respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of
description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made
at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.
3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed
bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot
for sale.
4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the
purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of
the date of sale.
Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If
any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and
the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three
days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after
deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser.
5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank
authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check
until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the
drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.
6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of
all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without
limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b)
offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to
pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.
7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such
purchaser for such item.
8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within
the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that
include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of
licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute
cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.
9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number.
Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and
other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of
Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.
10. Except for property purchased via on-line Live Auctions, a premium equal to 18.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus
10% of the final bid over $200,000, will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the Buyer as part of the purchase price. The buyers premium on
property purchased via on-line Live Auctions will be in the amount equal to 22.5% of the final bid price up to and including $200,000, plus 15%
of the final bid over $200,000.
11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person,
through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or
reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The
copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this
catalogue, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our
prior written consent.
13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or
choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in
connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any
federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the nonexclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or
hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
