Adult (Professional Development)
Time Frame:
4 hours
Preparation
I sent out an initial email to the feeder high school to determine the interestlevel in a podcast workshop. I received about 6 responses from teacherswho did not have much experience using podcasts for instructional purposes.I scheduled the workshop after school in the feeder high school media centerfor two days. The day before the workshop, I downloaded any necessarysoftware and made sure I had the appropriate materials available.
Assessment
After the first session, I gave the learners a homework assignment. Theirassignment was to come up with an idea for a podcast that they can use intheir classroom or as extra supplemental material for their teacher webpage. The learners were able to create a podcast, some independently and somewith guided assistance. About a week after the workshop, I had a couple of the teachers to e-mail me about using their podcast in the classroom.Following is a sample of podcasts that were made.
Podcast #1
Purpose: “I wanted a podcast to help my foreign language students with theirpronunciation of foreign words.”
Podcast #2
Purpose: “I want to be able to reach my auditory learners who learn betterwith my powerpoints I have online.”
Podcast #3
Purpose: “I had a student who had an 8
th
grade middle school language artsteacher who created podcasts and he found it very helpful and wanted toknow if I did the same. I never thought about using podcasts in theclassroom before this so I wanted to review grammar and citations for apaper.”
