Writing Workshop Reflection

Writing workshop was a fun learning experience for me because I enjoy writing. I

especially enjoy writing when I have a choice. From my own personal experiences, I believe this

inspires students. This inspiration guides students with putting more time and effort into their

work. For this piece of writing, I felt more inspired and found the writing process much easier

then when writing a paper for a class in which I am not interested in the topic. However, it was

difficult for me to decide what to write about since there were no guidelines.

I decided to write about a personal experience in my life for this writing piece. I believe it

is important to allow students to write about their personal lives. Having students write about

their personal experiences from a young age helps them become more comfortable sharing

information about their personal lives in their writing. This guides the student’s writing with

being a more powerful piece of writing. I felt comfortable and enjoyed sharing my piece of

writing with a classmate. However, by taking part in writing workshop I could see how a student

would not feel comfortable sharing their writing with a classmate.

When I have my own classroom, I will have more empathy for students when they write,

especially when the students “free-write.” I found it difficult to pick a topic to write about, so I

will understand how my students feel if they have “writer’s-block.” Also, it can be difficult

sharing personal pieces of writing. Students are proud of their work, and having someone else

read your personal writing and critique it can be difficult for some students. For this reason, it is

important to have students begin working with others and sharing their pieces of writing at a

young age, especially during writing workshop.
