Annual National Solar Tour
Scheduled annually for the first Saturday in October, in conjunction withNational Energy Awareness Month, the American Solar Energy Society(ASES) National Solar Tour is the world's largest grassroots solar event.The event offers participants the opportunity to tour homes and buildingsto see how their neighbors are using solar energy, energy efficiency, and othersustainable technologies, to reduce their monthly utility bills, and help tackleclimate change.In 2009, nationwide, over 150,000 attendees visited some 5,000 buildingsin 3,000 participating communities.Now in its 15th year, this event is coordinated nationally by the nonprofitASES (www.ases.org). In 2010, the Indiana Renewable Energy Association (InREA) will behosting the 2nd annual Indianapolis tour.

Please join us for the kickoff of our local, self-guided Indy Area Tour at Cool Creek Nature Center at 2 PM.The Indy Solar Tour will include homes and businesses utilizing renewable energy technologies (PV (Photovoltaic),wind, solar thermal, and passive solar). The sites will be available for public tours from 2 PM to 6 PM unless otherwisenoted. On the day of the Solar Tour, this site is only available for tours between 2 and 5:30 PM
.In 2010, Cool Creek Nature Center installed a 15,680 watt solar photovoltaic array consisting of 64 @ 245-watt solarmodules. This PV system provides an example of the most current installation practices for medium-sized roof mountedinstallations. The nature center is open between 10am and 5pm. A representative from ECI Wind and Solar will be presentto answer any questions, and assist patrons on the solar tour. The Nature Center is located in Cool Creek Park, and serves asthe central hub for many different indoor and outdoor activities in a beautiful 90-acre park.http://www.hamiltoncounty.in.gov/parks_details.asp?id=2923

IMPA (Indiana Municipal Power Agency) has 3 renewable energy systems: (a) A roof mounted 6.35 kW photovoltaic systemcomprised of 27 @ 235W Sharp solar panels and 2 Solectrica inverters, (b) a hot water system by Heliodyne that consists of 2 solar collector panels, a heat exchanger, and a hot water storage tank (which provides the entire building with hot water onsunny days), (c) a 1.5 kW wind turbine manufactured by Urban Green Energy. All systems were sourced by ECI Wind andSolar (www.eciwindandsolar.com). Grant funding for the installation of the solar hot water and photovoltaic systems was provided by the Indiana Office of Energy Development.http://www.impa.com/renewable-energy-demonstrations.asp

The Broad Ripple Brewpub recently installed a solar thermal system that uses Apricus evacuated tube technology and heatexchangers to heat water to temperatures up to 170ºF. The heated water can be used for domestic hot water or space heating.The system was installed by IDS (www.idsustainability.com).
