ITHTHISPAPERIwishtosetforththeargumentsfortenrecentornewhieroglyphicreadings-somebuildingonthesuggestionsofmycolleagues-inthehopethattheywillcontributetoafullerreconstructionofthephoneticsyllabaryoftheancientMayascript.ThemostrecentsummariesofprogressinourknowledgeoftheMayasyllabaryarethoseofMathews(1984:311-314)andBricker(1986:6-9).Theserevealnotonlythatourknowl-edgeisfarfromcomplete,butalsothattherearedisagreementsamongepigraphistsconcerninganumberofthesyllabicvaluesattributedtovarioussigns.Thereadingspresentedhere,ifcor-rect,shouldhelpsubstantiallyinfillinganumberofgaps,andinsodoing,resultinsomede-ciphermentsofinterest.Thispaperisdividedintotensections,eachdevotedtoaparticularsyllabicsign.Thereadingsproposedorelaborateduponhereare
